THE PERSPECTIVE WALL Jock D Mackinlay George D Robertson Stuart K Card
2
Purpose large linear Perspective Wall is used to visualize large volumes of linear data (for instance, chronological / alphabetical data).
3
Motivation To combine Detail and Context Center panel to view detail Perspective panels to view context To handle Wide Aspect Ratios
4
Aspect Ratio -the relative horizontal and vertical sizes. For example, if a graphic has an aspect ratio of 2:1, it means that the width is twice as large as the height.
5
Salient features Folding is used to distort a 2-D layout into a 3-D visualization, using hardware support for 3-D interactive animation. Perspective panels are shaded to enhance the effect of 3-D. Vertical dimension can be used to visualize layering information.
7
Beyond 1-D
8
Space Utilization Details on the Center Panel are at least three times larger than the details on a flat wall that fits in the field of view. Perspective Wall makes three times as much information visible as a flat wall that has details of the same size.
9
Advantages Smooth Animation / Transition of views helps user perceive object constancy. Highlights relationships between objects in detail and context; e.g.; objects bend around the corner. Ease in adjusting the ratio of detail to context, as the user desires. Intuitive and easy to use and learn.
10
HCI Metrics Easy to learn Easy to use, intuitive High User Retention Good User Satisfaction Errors – No scope for errors
