2 The Holy Spirit Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Pt. 4 Gifts of the Holy Spirit “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant” 1 Cor. 12:1 1. “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.” 1 Cor. 12:1 2. In the last lesson we discussed the Baptism of the Holy Spirit a. Mark 1:8 - promised to the Apostles b. Christ promised it - gave it to the Apostles on Pentecost c. Acts 2 - the 12 Apostles received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit d. This Holy Spirit guided them into all truth e. It also gave them the ability to perform miracles and signs which confirmed the truth. They were able to give gifts of the Holy Spirit to others 3. There is a difference between the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. a. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit was promised by Christ and he was the one who administered it. b. The gifts of the Holy Spirit comes through humans 4. These miraculous gifts have ceased. a. We do not deny that they were done, but it is a question of them continuing today. b. We are not limiting God’s power, but does God use that power today? c. We are not denying the providence of God. But in providence, does God work through His natural laws or the supernatural? 5. This lesson is about these gifts of the Holy Spirit which the Apostles could bestow on others by the laying on of their hands

3 Gifts of the Holy Spirit
1. Gifts of the Holy Spirit “And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people.” Acts 5:12 Acts 3:1-7 Peter healed a man lame from birth Acts 6: Apostles gave a gift to others - Stephen did “great wonders and miracles” I. GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT A. Examples of the Apostles doing wonders and signs 1. Acts 5:12 “And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people.” 2. Acts 3:1-7 - Peter healed the man lame from birth B. The apostles could lay their hands on others and give them a gift of the Holy Spirit 1. Acts 6:1-8 - v.6 Up until this time there is no record of any Christians other than the apostles performing any miracles. 2. Acts 6:8 - Shortly after the apostles had laid their hands upon the seven, Stephen wrought great wonders and signs among the people.

4 Gifts of the Holy Spirit
1. Gifts of the Holy Spirit “When Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied” Acts 19:6 "Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands” Tim. 1:6

5 Gifts of the Holy Spirit
1. Gifts of the Holy Spirit Only Apostles Imparted Gifts of Holy Spirit Acts 8:4-25 Philip in Samaria - converted Simon Peter and John came from Jerusalem and laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit v “When Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, saying, "Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit Rom. 1:11 “For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established” But only the apostles could impart gifts of the Holy Spirit to others 1. Acts 8: Philip preached in Samaria and converted Simon - Peter and John came from Jerusalem and laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. 2. Acts 8:18-19 “when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, Act 8:19 saying, "Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 3. The presence of an apostle was necessary for these gifts to be imparted to others. 4. If it had been possible for the apostles to have imparted these gifts by prayer, it would have been useless for Peter and John to have made this journey from Jerusalem to Samaria. 5. Rom. 1:11 “For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established”

6 2. Varity of Gifts 1 Cor. 12:4-11 9 Gifts are listed Groups of Gifts Intellectual Powers (1) “Word of Wisdom” (2) “Word of Knowledge” (3) “Faith” 2. Exhibit Faith of One Who Possesses Gift (4) “Gifts of healing” (5) “Working of miracles” (6) “Prophecy” (7) “Discerning of Spirits” II. VARITY OF GIFTS - 1 Cor 12:4-11 A. 9 gifts are named, 3groups of gifts: 1. Intellectual Powers a. “Word of Wisdom” (1) Discourse prompted by wisdom of H.S. -- truth of God is produced in man -- ability to reveal divine truth (2) It obviously involved the gospel (I Cor. 15: 1-2) (3) The “word of wisdom” was “a comprehensive view of the scheme of redemption with the ability of clearly explaining it to the apprehension of others” b. “Word of knowledge” (1) ability to teach the word revealed (2) It seems to have especially affected the intellect and enable the person having this gift to understand the deeper matters of the gospel. c. “Faith” (1) Non-miraculous and ordinary faith comes by “hearing and hearing by the word of God” (Rom. 10: 17). (2) One purpose of Jesus' recorded miracles is to produce faith (3) However, the faith considered as a gift of the Spirit was supernatural (4) Those performing miracles had to believe they could, with the assistance of the Holy Spirit, do them. Hence, the need of this faith. (5) The gift of faith also illustrates the temporary function of these gifts of the Spirit. (6) That which enables man to move mountains, divine power - not ordinary trust in Christ, energy of faith which carries with it Divine Power 2. Exhibit faith of one who possesses the gift: a. “Gifts of healing” (1) Power to heal by supernatural means - restore the sick to health (2) The gift of healing was not bestowed so that the community of Christians could be free of health problems (I Tim. 5:23, 6: 20). (4) The primary function of this and all 9 gifts was to serve as a sign and means of confirming the spoken word (5) We must realize that the apostles and early Christian did not, at first, have the revealed New Testament, as we possess it today. (6) Today, we can provide book, chapter, and verse to verify and confirm the truthfulness of what we teach. (7) In the absence of such verification, they often performed miracles to convince the observers. b. “Working of miracles” (1) acts of super-natural powers (2) The Greek energemat a dunameon (“working of miracles”) can be translated, “active efficacy of powers.” (3) The reference seems to be to “mighty signs and wonders” (4) There is probably an allusion to the extraordinary and unusual kinds of miracles, such as are referenced in Mark 16: 18. c. “Prophecy” [6] (1) Inspiration, guide to speak error free truth (2) The gift of prophecy enabled the prophet to speak and teach miraculously. (3) The matter that distinguished the prophet from the teacher was the prophet's ability to foretell the future and to issue teaching based on That prophecy. (4) Agabus foretold of a great dearth and certain consequent preparation was made as a result (Acts 11: 28-30). (5) Prophecy appears to have been a little esteemed and considered gift among the Christians at Corinth (I Cor. 14: 1 ff.). (6) It appears they exalted the gift of tongues over the gift of prophecy to the point of the neglect of prophecy. d. “Discerning of Spirits” (1) Could tell which teachers were of God and which were false teachers (2) Today this miraculous gift not neede today, b/c we have God’s reveal truth to determine if a teacher teaches truth or error 3. Gifts of tongues a. “Divers kinds of tongues” (1) This was a language, not just a mumbling of sounds or noise (2) The tongues of the NT do not even resemble the emotional and unintelligible displays that are called speaking in tongues today. (3) In the first place, tongues were languages. When the apostles were baptized in the Holy Spirit they “spoke with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance” (Acts 2: 4). (4) We then read Acts 2:6 “when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.” (5) They are called “unknown tongues” only in the climate of the hearer not knowing the language. (6) The phenomenon of tongues allowed those early Christians who possessed this ability to gain the attention of the hearer and to impress upon the hearer that something supernatural was present (9) Tongues were a highly sought after, but abused gift in the church at Corinth (I Cor. 14). b. “Interpretation of tongues” (1) Ability to know what those speaking in tongues are saying. (2) Just as there were those in the early church who could miraculously speak another language, there were also those who could interpret. (3) Not all hearers in an audience could always understand a language; hence, the need for miraculous interpretation. (4) Unintelligible gibberish was of no use, the speaker had to be understood so the meaning could instruct and benefit 3. Gifts of Tongues (8) “Various tongues” (9) “Interpretation of tongues”

7 Gifts Were to Confirm the Preaching
2. Varity of Gifts 1 Cor. 12:4-11 Gifts Were to Confirm the Preaching “They went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs.“ Mk. 16:20 "For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established” Rom. 1:11 These gifts were given to confirm the preaching of the apostles and early Christians 1. Mk. 16:20 “they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs.” 2. Rom. 1:11 “For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established” 3. As a whole, one can see how these gifts fortified, guarded, and edified the early church in the absence of the completed New Testament. 4. They enjoyed miraculous knowledge and the wisdom to apply it with understanding. They had the gift of healing. They could confirm the spoken word with “working of miracles” and miraculously teach and foretell the future with the gift of prophecy. They could determine a true and false teacher in the absence of total revealed truth by the discerning of spirits. They were able to converse, teach, and have the language understood to all present in languages unknown to them as a result of the gift of tongues and the interpretation of tongues.

8 These Gifts Were to Cease
2. Varity of Gifts 1 Cor. 12:4-11 These Gifts Were to Cease 1 Corinthians 13:8 “Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.” D. These gifts were to cease I Cor 13:8-13 1. Paul selected three of these nine gifts to show their limited duration. 2. v. 8 “Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.” 3. He said that “prophecies would fail,” “tongues would cease,” and “knowledge would vanish away” – notice he uses only 3 of these 9 gifts, but the truth he is speaking about applies to all of them 4. v. 9 “For we know in part and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.” 5. (CLICK) “part” refers back to those spiritual gifts “knowledge, tongues, prophecies” he says those things are going to be done away. IN v. 8 he said they are going to fail, they are going to cease, they will vanish away. 6. (CLICK) He says when “that which is perfect has come” is when these miraculous gifts of the spirit will be done away 1Cor. 13:9 “For we know in part and we prophesy in part But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.”

9 What is “That which is Perfect”?
2. Varity of Gifts What is “That which is Perfect”? 2nd Coming of Christ - Why did Paul not say: “But when Christ is come” - In part state now Col.2:10 “You are complete in Him” Completion of Revelation - “perfect” - full, complete, mature - Jas.1:25 “perfect law of liberty” 5. E. What is that which is Perfect mean? There are essentially two explanations offered. The first is that it refers to the 2nd Coming of Christ and the second view refers to the completion of God’s revelation (the Bible) (1) If the return of Christ is meant, why did not Paul write, “but when the Christ is come?” (2) If this is true, we are still in that “in part state” right now. Meaning we only have part of God’s knowledge and part of His Word. Bt this would contradict other scriptures Col. 2:10 “You are complete in Him” The second view, the completion of revelation. The word “perfect” means full, complete, or mature (2) James wrote, “he who looks into the perfect law of liberty…” – God’s message He has given to us (4) During the “in part” time, those Christians only had part of God’s revelation, thus the need for people like the apostles to possess these miraculous gifts of the H.S.

10 The Gifts have Ceased Varity of Gifts 2.
“perfect law of liberty” describes the gospel revealed Now the Spirit works through the Word to accomplish His work. The Spirit: sanctifies, convicts, saves and continues to exert power (1 Pet. 1:2; Jn. 16:8; Tit. 3:5) When God’s Word was completed then the signs were no longer needed.

11 The Gifts have Ceased Varity of Gifts 2.
The church is older than the New Testament “How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?” Heb. 2:3-4 1. The church is older than the New Testament. The church had been in existence for several years before the first line of the N.T. was written. 2. Heb. 2:3-4 “how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?” (explain) 3. Since these gifts of the Holy Spirit were given by the laying on of the hands of the Apostles, then these gifts would last only until the death of the last apostle and the death of those upon whom the apostles had laid their hands.
