2 COLLECTION OF STATISTICS  Maldives has a decentralised statistical system  The Statistics Division of the Department of National Planning is responsible for the development of the national statistical system in addition to the collection and compilation of the core social and economic statistics

3 PERCENTAGE SHARE OF GDP BY SECTOR, 2012 Tertiary sector > 80% Manufacturing 4.7% Since the economy is very small and is heavily depends on tertiary sector, no special survey is done to capture the industrial statistics

4  Done for the first time in 2007/2008  Currently conducting second survey in 2012/2013  Definition of Establishment  An establishment is an enterprise, or part of an enterprise:  that is situated in a single location and in which only a single (non-ancillary) productive activity is carried out Or  in which the principal productive activity accounts for most of the value added ECONOMIC SURVEY 2012/2013

5 COVERAGE OF ECONOMIC SURVEY Incorporate establishments AND Unincorporated establishments covered in ES household economic activities: covered under HIES Frequency – every five years Incorporated Establishments Economic Survey ES Unincorporated Establishments All economic activities Household Income and Expenditure Survey HIES Household Establishments

6 OBJECTIVES OF ECONOMIC SURVEY  Measure the size and structure of establishments  To use in the compilation of Gross Domestic Product (G.D.P) by various industries and other national accounts aggregates  Compilation of economic indicators to monitor the performance of various economic activities:  Output per worker, average salaries etc in specific industries  Provide data aggregated and analysed in a manner that can be used for national & sectoral planning and be useful by private sector for their business development  To compute weights for the producer Price Index and Index of Industrial Production

7 DATA COLLECTED  Establishment Characteristics: size, type..  Employment and compensation  Production, income, sales  Consumption of materials, expenditures  Capital formation: fixed assets  Stocks and inventories

8 SAMPLING TECHNIQUES USED  Country was Stratified into three domains  Male’ City  Addu City  Atolls  In Atolls all the establishments were enumerated for the islands with population of 2500 and above

9 SAMPLING TECHNIQUES USED  In Male’ City and Addu City  A listing was done to use as a frame for sample selection  All the establishments were classified into major groups of ISIC Rev.4  ISIC groups with less than 20 establishments were included in the sample  For ISIC groups with more than 20 establishments: 1. include all the establishments having employment above 20 2. Simple Random Sample was taken for the establishments having less than 20 employees

10 ISSUES  Geographical barriers  High staff turnover  Unavailability of financial data required by the unincorporated establishments eg: small retail shops  Lack of staff with adequate knowledge and skills  Lacks a means to update the business register – currently discussion going on with the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA)
