3 Objectives ▪ Understand Primary and Secondary sources ▪ Identify parts of speech as adverbs/infinitives/prepositions Homework: 1) Finish compiling sources for Monday. You need 4. 2) Complete Adverb/infinitive worksheet.

4 Warm Up ▪ Identify the Adverbs in the sentences by underlining them. Box prepositional phrases. Identify any infinitive phrases. 1.Ian and Tom ran across. 2.Terri and Shawna saw the UFO falling down. 3.Will you run to the house? 4.Kelly liked to paint portraits. Pass up your homework to the first person in the rows. Make sure your name is on it.

5 English I – Vocab Unit 2 Quiz 1. WRITE YOUR NAME AT THE TOP OF THE PAPER! 2.Look to the first step 3.Eyes on your own paper 4.Hold it up when finished.

6 Honors – Grammar Pop Quiz WRITE YOUR NAME AT THE TOP! Write “Adverb” or “Prep.” over the underlined word to indicate what part of speech it is. 1.Mom yelled, “Go outside and play!” 2.I read through the history book last night. 3.I saw the student sneak in. 4.Get me a book about politics. 5.Don’t wonder about.

7 Honors – Grammar quiz part II Underline only the infinitive phrase in the sentence, if present. 1. I didn’t like to go to the zoo. 2. Todd ran to school in the morning. 3. Heather loved to dance in the rain. 4. Can you run to the city for supplies? 5. The bird failed to fly over the wall.

8 Grammar ▪ Adverbs -> Do not have an object. – Remember, prepositions that do not have an object are adverbs. – I fell down. – I fell down the hill. ▪ Infinitives -> to + a verb. – The most basic form of a verb. – To run, to play, to dance. ▪ I will hand you an Adverb/Infinitive worksheet. Complete as much as you can. The unfinished portion will be homework.

9 Primary Sources ▪ A primary source is a document or physical object which was written or created during the time under study. These sources were present during an experience or time period and offer an inside view of a particular event. Some types of primary sources include: ▪ ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS (excerpts or translations acceptable): Diaries, speeches, manuscripts, letters, interviews, news film footage, autobiographies, official records ▪ CREATIVE WORKS: Poetry, drama, novels, music, art ▪ RELICS OR ARTIFACTS: Pottery, furniture, clothing, buildings

Examples of primary sources include: ▪ Diary of Anne Frank - Experiences of a Jewish family during WWII ▪ The Constitution of Canada - Canadian History ▪ A journal article reporting NEW research or findings ▪ Weavings and pottery - Native American history ▪ Plato's Republic - Women in Ancient Greece

11 Secondary Sources ▪ A secondary source interprets and analyzes primary sources. These sources are one or more steps removed from the event. ▪ Secondary sources may have pictures, quotes or graphics of primary sources in them. Some types of secondary sources include: ▪ PUBLICATIONS: Textbooks, magazine articles, histories, criticisms, commentaries, encyclopedias

12 Secondary Sources cont. Examples of secondary sources include: ▪ A history textbook ▪ A book about the effects of WWI ▪ A journal/magazine article which interprets or reviews previous findings

13 Closure – 3, 2, 1 Write: 3 sentences that contain adverbs. 2 examples of infinitive phrases. 1 example of a primary source and 1 example of a secondary source.
