3. Mr. Chuck Sullivan completed a five-day poetry workshop with six ninth-grade English classes. He worked with Mrs. Mary Naber, English teacher; Amber Nance, EC teacher; Mrs. Cheryl Jeffries, English teacher; Tim Parsons, student teacher. Approximately 150 students participated in the experience. Twelve teachers participated in either the actual teaching throughout the experience or the after-school workshop.

5. Goals of the project  Students learn to connect the abstract to the concrete.  Students learn how to use language in original ways by extending similes and metaphors.  Students take risks and make a personal investment in their writing.  Students read aloud and share their poetry.  Teachers learn strategies for teaching poetry.  Teachers learn how to help students connect poetry to their personal experiences.  Teachers connect personally with their students.
