How to Recognize Signs, Symptoms, and Risks of Developing Diabetes Mellitus Learners: At-risk overweight individuals and parents of infants Learning Objective: After the demonstration, learners will recall the 7 risk factors that contribute to diabetes Learners will also recall the two types of diabetes and subjectively determine if they are at risk for developing or may already show signs of diabetes

After the demonstration, learners will recall the 7 risk factors that contribute to diabetes Men are at higher risk then Women Increase in age means there is an increase in risk African/A merican, Native Americans Hispanic/ Latinos, and Asian American /Pacific Islanders Increase in weight means there is an increase in risk Decrease in activity means there is an increase in risk Linked to development More than one drink a day for Women or two drinks a day for Men

Learners will also recall the two types of diabetes and subjectively determine if they are at risk for developing or may already show signs of diabetes Juvenile Diabetes/Insulin- dependent seen in children and young adults from a lack of insulin in the body Typically diagnosed in middle-aged and older individuals due to previously mentioned risks (slide 2) caused by insulin resistance
