2 Ocean Zones Sunlit Zone: Top layer, nearest the surface. Enough light to support photosynthesis. Twilight Zone: Small amount of light penetrates the water. Water becomes deeper, and pressure increase, too. Plants do not grow here. Only animals that have adapted to little light survive. 

3 Midnight Zone: 90% of the ocean is in the midnight zone. Entirely dark
Midnight Zone: 90% of the ocean is in the midnight zone. Entirely dark. Water pressure is extreme. Temperature is near freezing. Special forms of bacteria use hydrogen sulfide to make food. All other living things in this zone eat the bacteria.

5 Arctic Ocean Area= 12 million square km Average depth: 3,450 ft
Fragile ecosystem slow to change and slow to recover from disruptions or damage. Endangered species: Whales Walruses

6 Indian Ocean Area= 73 million square km Average depth= 12,762 ft
Greatest depth= 25,344 ft Endangered species: dugong Seals turtles whales

7 Pacific Ocean Area= 166 million square km Average depth= 14,000 ft
Greatest depth= 35,797 ft Endangered species: Dugong sea lion sea otter seals turtles whales
