2
Introduction—Temperature and Heat The measurement of the average kinetic energy of particles of a substance ( o C) Temperature-- Heat-- The transfer of energy from particles of one substance to particles of another substance Question #1: How is a particle’s speed related to its temperature? Push Arrow to Play! Objective #1: GAME!! –By controlling the temperature and a gate, students will capture all of the gas atoms in only one chamber.
3
Specific Heat Experiment Directions: – Place 50 ml of cool tap water into the calorimeter. Record temperature. – Record temperature of sample from hot plate. – Insert sample into calorimeter. – After equilibrium, record final temperature of water. Supplies: 1.Calorimeter (Cup and Lid) 2.Thermometer 3.50 ml of cool tap water 4.2 Samples of Heated Metal
4
Heat Calculation for Water Use the “heat calculator” spreadsheet to calculate the heat added to the water User Inputs: – Mass of sample – Specific Heat of substance (a list of substances is provided with the spreadsheet) – Temperature values Program Outputs: – Heat added to water
5
Calculation of Specific Heat of Sample Using the “heat calculator,” find the specific heat of your sample. Go to the SED 555 newsgroup to input your data for class averaging. Input this specific heat into the newsgroup heading—Class Results-Specific Heat
