Water Conservation by Nishil Thumu
2
Summary of Lesson There is limited amount of fresh water on earth, we need to conserve to make fresh water supplies last longer.
3
California’s Water Needs California’s growing population and it’s vast fields of crops required huge amounts of fresh water. The state’s people and farm fields are not close to its major water supplies. California transfers water from wet north to dry south using system of canals, pipes, aqueducts, dams, pumps and reservoirs.

Sharing Water California gets most of their water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin River system and the Colorado River. Six other states and part of Mexico share the Colorado River. In the past Arizona and Nevada allowed California to use some of the excess water they did not need. By 2015 California is expected to use only their share of water.
5
Conserving Water The careful use of natural resource, such as water is conservation. Most of California's water is used to irrigate farms, we can save water by irrigating wisely. Drip irrigation helps save water. Recycling of waste water is called water reclamation. Between 50 to 75 percent of waste water from homes and offices can be used to water lawns or plants or to wash floors and cars.
6
Tips To Conserve water Take short shower. Turn of water while brushing your teeth. Run only full loads in dish and clothes washers. To wash dishes, fill the sink or basin with water. Don’t let the faucet run. Install low-flow toilets and shower heads.
7
Alternate Sources of Water Desalination plants can supply fresh water from sea water. Desalination plants have drawbacks that is harmful to nature.
8
Beyond the Book California is currently undergoing a drought.
9
Facts about the Draught Biggest draught in California’s recorded history. The state is using its groundwater supply to replenish its surface water needs. Humans aren’t the only ones being affected — nature is, too. The drought isn’t going to end anytime soon.
10
What can we Do? Be smart about using the water you have. Only run the washer when there is a full load. Fix leaking sinks. Get efficient house hold items such as sprinklers, toilets, shower heads. Reuse water effectively.
