4.  Were printed in England as early as the 1570’s.  The first important nursery rhyme dates back to the 14 th century (1300’s).  What is the history of nursery rhymes?  The words and lyrics were used to parody royal and political events, actual historical events and the culture of the day.  Used to spread subversive messages. 5.  Who is Mother Goose?  Mother Goose is possibly a term for a witch!!  Hard to believe that Mother Goose is now associated with simple rhymes, created for children! NURSERY RHYMES

Hickory dickory dock The mouse ran up the clock The clock struck one The mouse ran down Hickory dickory dock  Believed to originate in America  Nonsense rhyme to help young children learn to tell time  Hickory: for the hickory pod - liquor  Dickory: rhymes with “Hickory”  Dock: a weed common to North America – used for medicine. 8.  Hot cross buns! Hot cross buns! One a penny two a penny - Hot cross buns If you have no daughters, give them to your sons One a penny two a penny - Hot cross buns!  Buns were sold on street corners – this rhyme mimics what the vendor would say to get a sale.  The cross on the buns is a symbol of the Resurrection and they are generally only sold at Easter time. 9. Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the King's horses, And all the King's men Couldn't put Humpty together again! HUMPTY DUMPTY

10.  In the 15 th century (1400’s) “Humpty Dumpty” was a term for someone who is obese.  So who was “Humpty Dumpty”?  Believe it or not, “Humpty Dumpty” was a cannon used during the English Civil War (1642-1649)!!! NURSERY RHYMES

12.  Think of a recent/current political event.  I will help brainstorm (for 5 minutes).  Write down (free write) terms and ideas regarding the event – you will have 5 minutes.  Create a nursery rhyme that children will read and be able to understand what is happening in the political event. 13.  Requirements :  Must rhyme (otherwise it’s not a nursery rhyme, is it?)  Have a least 4 lines  The political event must be recognizable but do not specifically mention.  Trade with the person to your left – read the nursery rhyme and determine the political event clues in the rhyme.
