2 S PAIN H ISTORY 700 A.D. Moors (Muslims from N. Africa) took control of Southern Spain 1000 A.D. Christians from Northern Spain began the reconquista to push the Moors our of Spain Lasts until all of Spain is reclaimed 1492-Christopher Columbus voyages to Americas for the first time 1500’s- Spain explorations make them RICH, and the world’s greatest POWER 1800’s- When colonies declare independence Spain’s power fades

3 S PAIN H ISTORY Spain remained a neutral power in WWI 1930’s- Civil War over monarchy or republic government Francisco Franco of the Fascist party won control and ruled as a dictator for almost 40 years.

4 S PAIN CULTURE How do cultural differences affect Spaniards? Where do most citizens live? What is Spain’s most famous traditional sport? Cultural Differences exist between the different regions of Spain Religion: Almost all Catholic Language: Spanish (different dialects) ROMANCE LANGUAGE Live in cities or towns in apartments City life provided jobs Entertainment: Soccer, dancing (Flamenco), Bull Fighting (Famous traditional sport)

5 S PAIN GOVERNMENT Parliamentary Monarchy Allowed people to have a voice in their government Elected officials and King make up government Basque: ethnic group that live in the Pyrenees mountains The Basque group are seeking to have their own separate nation. They have lived in Spain the longest out of any other group

6 S PAIN ECONOMY How has EU helped Spain’s Economy? Economy depends on fishing and farming After WWII Spain’s economy began to grow rapidly Factories began producing cars, steel, and tourism increased. 1980’s Spain joined the EU and boosted economy by increasing trade

7 P ORTUGAL G EOGRAPHY Shares the Iberian Peninsula with Spain, but occupies a must smaller area. It is located on Europe’s western coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. It’s location and interest in exploration helped it build an empire How did Portugal’s location contribute to its role as a leader in the Age of exploration?

8 P ORTUGAL H ISTORY How does Portuguese exploration bring wealth? Because of coastal location the Portuguese became skilled sailors, navigator, and shipbuilders Prince Henry sponsored many expeditions to help their country build an empire. Over seas colonies brought lots of wealth to Portugal. Asian spice trade, and resources from Africa and South American. Portugal lost power when their biggest resource, Brazil declared independence

9 P ORTUGAL C ULTURE How does Portugal remaining mostly rural affect its economy? Language: Portuguese Portuguese is a ROMANCE LANGUAGE Religion: Roman Catholic ½ of its citizens live in rural areas Cities are growing because people are moving to search for jobs Lisbon is Portugal’s capital and largest city Lisbon is the center of tourism and commerce. Especially in rural areas Catholic priests play a key role in political and social life Traditional Catholic celebrations are important Portugal today is still a largely rural country with many small farming and fishing villages.

10 P ORTUGAL G OVERNMENT Who has the power in a parliamentary democracy? 1976-present: Parliamentary Democracy The Prime Minister has the Power Citizens elect members of parliament and the president

11 P ORTUGAL E CONOMY How has Portugal’s economy changed from the 1400’s to present day? Today Portugal has one of the poorest economies. Leaders failed to strengthen economy, neglected roads, parts, and factories. Lack of energy and resources and poor educational system also slowed its growth. 1986: Joined the EU and worked to improve economy Expanded service industries, increased trade

12 Spain Portugal Word Bank: Spanish, parliamentary monarchy, economy grew after WWII, Moorish rule; had empires then power faded, mostly Catholic, EU members, Portuguese, parliamentary democracy, poor but developing country Both Compare and Contrast Spain and Portugal using the word bank below. Some of the following will fit into a category for both.

13 R UNNING WITH THE B ULLS B ACKGROUND The running with the Bulls takes place each day of the Fiesta at 8:00 A.M. The length of the run is about half mile and usually last about three minutes—unless one or more of the bulls get loose. The six bulls selected can weigh more than 1,300 pounds and are bred for the purpose of fighting. They are smart, fast, and aggressive, and unpredictable. Since record-keeping began in 1924, 13 deaths and hundreds of serious injuries have resulted from the Running of the Bulls. Question: Why might some people object to the Running of the Bulls?

Side 1: You think this is an classic entertainment activity that celebrates Portugal’s culture. Side 2: You think that this “entertainment” is harmful and dangerous to the bulls and people You are to create a poem with the pattern of: A, B, A, B The poem must clearly express which side you are on using the format above.
