TYPES OF CATARACT SURGERY Extracapsular - incision through sclera, lens capsule excised, lens is expressed by pressure; most popular Phacoemulsification - extracapsular; small incision, uses high frequency ultrasound device, breaks up lens, aspirate it, irrigation

PRE OP TEACHING FOR CATARACTS Clinical Setting- usually ambulatory centers Preparation for surgery Medications

POST OP CARE FOR CATARACTS Antibiotics given subconjunctivally Teach administration of meds (drops/ointment) Pain control-tylenol; cool compresses; NO ASA Activities that reduce increases of intraocular pressure (IOP) To watch for S&S of infection REPORT ANY REDUCTION IN VISION IMMEDIATELY
