2 Spellings: Given out Monday to learn for a test the following week. Maths: given out on Thursday to be given in the following Tuesday. Literacy: given out Thursday for the following Tuesday. Reading: Please listen to your child read for 10 minutes every day and record your comments in their Reading Diary. Please encourage your child to read a range of quality literature to improve their vocabulary and imaginations.

3 Literacy This half term we will be focusing on poetry and playscripts. In poetry we will look at a variety of poems about the sea including a famous one about The Titanic by Thomas Hardy ‘ The Convergence of the Twain.

5 This half term we will be recapping finding the area and perimeter of squares and rectangles by calculation and pursue a line of enquiry. We will use the relations of area and perimeter to find unknown lengths. We will also begin to understand the concept of volume; find the volume of a cube or cuboid by counting cubes; understand volume as measurement in three dimensions; relate volume to capacity; recognise and estimate volumes.

6 Science In Science this half term our topic is ‘Growing up and Growing Old. In this topic children look at and describe the changes as humans develop to old age. Pupils draw a timeline to indicate stages in the growth and development of humans. They also learn about the changes experienced in puberty.

7 Vocabulary: algorithm debug program obstacles platform icon Skills: problem solving logical thinking programming E-safety: Pupils using the school’s tablets will need to consider how to do so safely and purposefully. The pupils should also think carefully about any safety implications of the apps they develop. In this unit, the pupils will create a game using an app on the IPads. They will plan, design and create a computer game suitable for a specific target audience.

8 History/Geography This term we are studying our local river the River Thames. We will examine maps and trace the river’s course and consider how it affects the settlement of people. We will also consider the problem of flooding and explore how the Thames Barrier works.

9 Art: To complement our topic on water, Year 5 will look at the work of the Impressionist painters and explore how they captured the colours of water.

10 This half term we will be studying a unit of music relating to celebrations. We will be looking at what makes a great performance. We will learn about melodies and harmonies and how they are used in a song’s structure. We will learn how to perform a song with a complex structure in four parts. We will develop an awareness of ensemble playing and how to apply singing techniques to improve performance.

11 PE/Games Ball skills in cricket and rounders. Athletics skills. PSHE/RRS We will discuss the democratic process and take a look at the general election. We will encourage the children to hold debates on some of the more important issues.

12 RE: : Religion and the Environment In this unit children will learn: That Christians believe in a God who created a good and beautiful world The creation and flood stories as told in Genesis That everyone has responsibility to look after the world Some other creation stories and the ideas and concepts behind them About the life of St Francis To express their own ideas and values about the created world

14 This half term in French we will be studying healthy eating and the Café. We will learn key vocabulary relating to different foods. We will also learn phrases for ordering in a Café. We will increase our knowledge of French culture by looking at the food French people tend to eat. We will continue to practise our conversational skills in pairs and small groups. We will also use role play to learn new vocabulary.
