EDWARDSEDWARDS

STATISTICS is the science involving the: CCollection OOrganization RRepresentation AAnalysis IInterpretation of DATA

DATA is a collection of FIGURES/FACTS. N.B. Data is plural DATUM is singular Example: Month in which classmates are born? DATA: January, February, August, December, … Hours per week classmates spend on Math HW? DATA: 5hrs, 3hrs, 0hrs,10 hrs, … Favourite Subject? DATA: Math, Spanish, Science, …

Classification of Data: DATA QualitativeQuantitative DiscreteContinuous

Classification of Data:  QUALITATIVE ( data in categories) E.g. Subjects in which classmates received A’s, Favorite Sports, The Colour of Pens in the class  QUANTITATIVE (data in numbers) Eg. Hours Spent Playing Video Games, Number of Siblings, Number of Shoes Owned

Classification of Data:  DISCRETE ( data that can be counted) Eg. Number of suitcases lost, the number of green M& M’s in a bag  CONTINUOUS (data that has infinite values, usually measured) Eg. Height of Corn Plants, Time it Takes for a Car Battery to Die, Weight of Tomatoes Produced

Classification of Data: For each of the following state what information is collected and whether the data is Qualitative of Quantitative Aarushi collected clothing from her family members, to donate to a local charity, and counted the pieces of clothing in each bag: What Data is collected? Is it Qualitative or Quantitative?

Classification of Data: For each of the following state what information is collected and whether the data are Qualitative of Quantitative For 1 hour Peter notes the colour of each car that drives past his house: What Data is collected? Is it Qualitative or Quantitative?

Classification of Data: For each of the following state what information is collected and whether the data are Qualitative of Quantitative For two week Aman measures the time it takes to get to school: What Data is collected? Is it Qualitative or Quantitative?

Classification of Data: For each of the following state what information is collected and whether the data are Qualitative of Quantitative Travis asked each student in the class, “Which Holiday is your favourite – New Year's, Christmas, Easter, …?”: What Data is collected? Is it Qualitative or Quantitative?

Classification of Data: You want to conduct a simple survey about ONE of the following: Television Sports School Subjects Any other topic of Interest Write 2 questions you would use to collect data.  Question #1 should collect QUANTITATIVE data  Question #2 should collect QUALITATIVE data Conduct the survey in your class. IN-CLASS ACTIVITY

Sources for Data Collection:  PRIMARY SOURCES data obtained directly from target group E.g. Survey, Experiment, Observation  SECONDARY SOURCES data obtained from previous findings/ documentation on the topic of interest E.g. Internet, Books, Newspaper, etc

Methods of Data Collection:  Interview  Survey  Questionnaire  Research

Designing a Survey:

 Decide who is in your TARGET GROUP These are the specific people you want to gather data about. The group is called a POPULATION  Survey a SMALL PART of Population called a SAMPLE The Sample should be REPRESENTATIVE of the Population -they should have characteristics of the entire Population

Designing a Survey:  What data need to be collected  How accurate does it need to be?  Questions should be UNBIASED - the questions should be worded so as not to influence the sample to give certain answers

Designing a Survey:  Where to collect the data from?  How much data should be collected? SAMPLE SIZE  Choose a method of collection

Data can be Organized into:  Ungrouped Frequency Tables  Grouped Frequency Tables  Two-Way Tables

Data can be Represented in the following ways:  Pie Chart  Bar Chart  Pictograph  Line graph  Stem and Leaf Plot  Histogram  Scatter Graph

Identify the types of Data Representations below:
