Entry Task Give an example of a time that you set a goal for yourself and explain how you achieved that particular goal? – How long did it take? – Did you need help from others? – How did you feel when that goal was achieved?

What is a Goal? Goal-something that you work toward and take action steps to achieve

Goal Setting Goal Setting-a plan to determine ahead of time what is expected to be accomplished and how it can be accomplished

Purpose of Goal-Setting Goals guide and direct behavior. Goals provide clarity. Goals provide challenges and standards. Goals reflect what the goal setters consider important. Goals help improve performance. Goals increase the motivation to achieve. Goals help increase pride and satisfaction in achievements. Goals improve self-confidence. Goals help decrease negative attitude. People who use goal-setting effectively suffer less from stress and are better able to concentrate

What are the types of goals? Physical Goals - goals that are related to your physical well being and health Career Goals - improving transferable job skills, both hard and soft skills, and maintaining a job. Financial Goals - decisions about money and financial planning to live how you want to Relationships & Family Goals - improving friendships, making new ones, and deepening existing relationships.

Types of Goals Continued Self Development & Spiritual Goals - lifelong ability to learn, internal growth, and improving your attitude, self image, faith etc. Pleasure Goals - enjoyment, spending time for yourself, entertainment, and taking up new hobbies. Social Goals - giving back to society more than what you receive from it

Goal Length Short-term goals: goals that you will achieve in the near future ( in a day, within a week, or possibly within a few months) Long-term goals: goals that you will achieve over a longer period of time (one semester, one year, five years, or twenty years) Lifetime Goals: goals that you will work on achieving throughout your entire life to set expectations for a healthy life

Goal-Setting Model The SMART guidelines S-Specific M-Measurable A-Action-oriented R-Realistic T-Timely S: A goal of graduating from high school is too general. Specify how this will be accomplished. (Study more in order to receive better grades.) M: Establish criteria for how a goal is to be achieved. Measurable does not refer to a timeline; it means determining a way to measure the success in completing the long-range goal. A: Be proactive in taking action that will result in reaching the desired goal. R: Strive for attainable goals, considering the resources and constraints relative to the situation. T: Allow reasonable time to complete each goal, but not so much time the mentee loses focus or motivation.

Goal Setting Assignment Due next Monday- please use a separate sheet of paper Choose 3 goals that you would like to achieve and prioritize them in the order that you would like to complete them. Explain how each of these goals will be reached using all five guidelines of the SMART model
