Wiley|Wilson | 2014 Energy & Sustainability Conference – Building Rating Systems Title Senior Engineer with Wiley|Wilson LEED AP O+M (LEED AP since 2002) Founding President of USGBC Lynchburg Branch (SWVA Chapter) Lynchburg Green Building Initiative (LGBI) My passion is achieving energy efficiency through next generation building automation. Thorium Energy Alliance Commissioning Authority
3
Wiley|Wilson | 2014 Energy & Sustainability Conference – Building Rating Systems Title USGBC/GBCI – LEED GBI – Green Globes ILFI – Living Building Challenge EPA – ENERGY STAR ASHRAE – Building Energy Quotient ICC – International Green Building Code GREEN BUILDING RATINGS
4
Wiley|Wilson | 2014 Energy & Sustainability Conference – Building Rating Systems Title Founded in 1993, LEED begins 2000 LEED AP exams begin 2001 (181,000 LEED APs to date) 13,000 member organizations to date GSA requires LEED Silver beginning 2007 (LEED Gold beginning 2013) USGBC spins of GBCI in 2008 Current LEED rating programs begins 2009 USGBC/GBCI – LEED
5
Wiley|Wilson | 2014 Energy & Sustainability Conference – Building Rating Systems Title. USGBC/GBCI – LEED
6
Wiley|Wilson | 2014 Energy & Sustainability Conference – Building Rating Systems Title Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) begin in Canada (1996) The Green Building Initiative – In 2004 acquired the rights to BREEAM, now Green Globes GBI became the first building rating system to be an accredited standards developer by ANSI (2005) GBI – GREEN GLOBES
7
Wiley|Wilson | 2014 Energy & Sustainability Conference – Building Rating Systems Title Fees are similar ($3,000 to $5,000) Time to complete documents is 25% of that required by LEED Forest certifications (4 vs. 1) Weighted Criteria –No Prerequisites –Removes Non-applicable Criteria (more flexibility) –Partial Credit GREEN GLOBES VS. LEED
8
Wiley|Wilson | 2014 Energy & Sustainability Conference – Building Rating Systems Title Four level of performance (1-4 globes vs. Certified, Silver, Gold, Platinum) Allows regional variations Energy –LEED (benchmark against hypothetical building model) –GG (benchmark against regional performance similar to ENERGY STAR) Key difference is flexibility GREEN GLOBES VS. LEED
9
Wiley|Wilson | 2014 Energy & Sustainability Conference – Building Rating Systems Title GREEN GLOBES VS. LEED
10
Wiley|Wilson | 2014 Energy & Sustainability Conference – Building Rating Systems Title International Living Future Institute – Living Building Challenge began 2006 Similar ratings to LEED and GG Requires 12 months of successful operation before certification All building receive a site visit and audit Lower fees and less mature organization ILFI – LIVING BUILDING
11
Wiley|Wilson | 2014 Energy & Sustainability Conference – Building Rating Systems Title Green Building Certification System Review (March 2012) www.gsa.gov/portal/category/25999 70 page report comparing the three comprehensive green building rating systems LEED / GG / LBC
12
Wiley|Wilson | 2014 Energy & Sustainability Conference – Building Rating Systems Title Energy Rating of 1 to 100 Earn the ENERGY STAR at 75+ Free, except for a small AE fee for certification Can track monthly rating plus carbon footprint Compares actual performance with your regional peers Used for LEED O+M and other ratings EPA – ENERGY STAR
13
Wiley|Wilson | 2014 Energy & Sustainability Conference – Building Rating Systems Title Compares As Designed (A – F) to Operational performance (A – F) bEQ is the “next step” beyond the ENERGY STAR (gives a path forward) Requires an ASHRAE Level 1 audit bEQ requires a PE or ASHRAE certified professional to submit documentation ($500 fee), although worksheets are available for free
14
Wiley|Wilson | 2014 Energy & Sustainability Conference – Building Rating Systems Title International Code Council developed the first model code for minimum green requirements for new and existing buildings Relies on the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and ASHRAE 189.1 Goal is an enforceable green building standard ICC – IGCC
