Measurement
3
What the Metric System can Measure http://www. youtube. com/watch
Metric units can be used to measure the following: Length Mass/weight Volume Temperature
4
How to Remember the Units
King Henry Died [ ] Drinking Chocolate Milk King = Kilo = 1,000 Henry = Hecto = 100 Died = Deka =10 [ ] = Meter, Liter, Gram Drinking = Deci = .1 (tenth) Chocolate = Centi = .01 (hundredth) Milk = Milli = .001 (thousandth)
5
How to use the mnemonic We look at what we are going to measure.
Ex. The length of a pencil We match that with the correct unit of measurement. Ex. length = meter We attach the largest appropriate prefix to the main unit. Ex. Attach the prefix “Centi” to the main unit “Meter” to make Centimeter
6
Length Main unit of measurement = METER From smallest unit to largest…
Millimeter Centimeter Decimeter Meter Dekameter Hectometer Kilometer
7
Mass Main unit of measurement= Gram From smallest unit to largest:
Milligram Centigram Decigram Gram Dekagram Hectogram Kilogram
8
Volume Main unit of measurement = LITER From smallest unit to largest:
Milliliter Centiliter Deciliter Liter Dekaliter Hectoliter Kiloliter
9
Temperature The unit of measurement = Celsius (C°)
When using Celsius, the freezing point is at 0°C When using Celsius, the boiling point is at 100°C When using Fahrenheit, freezing point is 32°F When using Fahrenheit, boiling point is 212°F
