When European cultures were introduced to the existing Native American cultures, in our state of south Carolina, problems arose. Cultural clash, the term used for when two cultures have conflict, was the result of European settlement. In the beginning, most native Americans were friendly to the Europeans and enjoyed their trading relationship. Europeans traded with the native Americans for furs in exchange for knives, guns, and other manufactured goods. Trade relations between the two groups worsened when they were handled unfairly by the Europeans. Highlight in the selection where you see examples of conflict and underline in the selection where you see cooperation. Herndon Production

European settlers moved west from our state of South Carolina’s lowcountry to the back country. Native American tribes had moved farther west themselves and now were encountered by the Europeans once again. As Europeans continued to encroach on the territories and hunting grounds of the Native Americans, conflict arose over the ideas of land ownership and land use. Herndon Production

There was conflict over land
Native Americans believed in communal ownership of the land and that it could not be owned. Europeans believed individual ownership of the land and claimed it for themselves. The difference in beliefs of these two cultures caused conflict, or cultural clash. Europeans settled in the town of Beaufort, in our state of South Carolina. As a result, the Yemassee fought back. For a year there was much violence and bloodshed between the native nations and the European settlers of South Carolina. Cause Effect There was conflict over land Herndon Production

The Yemassee resisted the European settlers, but some Native Americans tribes did not.
The Cherokee sided with the English against the Yemassee and their allies, or friends. There was much violence and bloodshed. This Yemassee War ended in a truce, or agreement, from both sides. The Yemassee, the Cherokee, and the Europeans were badly wounded by the year of hardship. This conflict eventually caused the Yemassee to be driven, or forced, out of our state of South Carolina. Conflict and Cooperation
After the Yemassee War ended, the Cherokee would eventually fight a four-year war against the European settlers over the failure of the Governor to keep promises made to them. A peace treaty, or agreement, was signed setting borders for Cherokee and settler lands. This cooperation ended the war between them. Unfortunately, a large number of Native Americans, in our state of South Carolina, were killed from disease. The Native Americans had no immunity to European diseases. The combining of the European cultures, Native American cultures, and African American slaves began to form a new and unique culture in our state of South Carolina. How did Native Americans and Europeans cooperate in the above selection? What was a result of the conflict between Native Americans and Europeans? Herndon Production
