Challenging Question Why does the heart beat faster after exercise? The human body needs more energy during exercise. More oxygen is needed to produce energy. The heart beats faster to pump more blood so as to carry more oxygen to the cells.

The heart rate sensor sends light through your ear lobe. As your heart beats, the amount of blood in the capillaries near the surface of the skin will vary. Therefore the amount of light that passes through your ear lobe varies too. The sensor measures changes in light transmittance of your ear lobe.
