What are GMO’s? The term GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organisms. The certain organisms have been created through gene-splicing techniques of biotechnology. Which is also called genetic engineering, or GE.
3
What is it used for? GMO’s are used mostly in the agriculture industry. The “relatively new science allows DNA from one species to be injected into another species in a laboratory” (GENETICALLY) Which “creates combinations of plants, animals, bacteria, and even viral genes that don’t occur in nature” (GENETICALLY).
5
A Interesting Fact “In 30 other countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production of GMOs” (GENETICALLY).
6
Are GMO’s used in the U.S.? Yes. The FDA (Food And Drug Administration) has approved the commercial use of GMO’s because studies have proven them to be safe.
7
Are GMO’s safe for the publics consumption? There is no proves studies that show that GMO’s are harmful. The only harmful reaction consumers have experienced from GMO’s are allergic reactions or allergies.
8
What are the benefits of using GMO’s? More nutritious food. Tastier food. Disease and drought resistant plants that require fewer environmental resources. Decreased use of pesticides. Increased supply of food with reduced cost and longer shelf life.
9
Benefits Continued Faster growing plants and animals. Food with more desirable traits, such as potatoes that absorb less fat when fried. Medicinal foods that could be used as vaccines or other medications.
10
Potential Risks Modified plants or animals may have genetic changes that are unexpected. Modified organisms may interbreed with natural organisms out- complete them,, leading to extinction of the original organism or to other unpredictable environmental effects. Plants may be less resistant to some pests and more susceptible to others.
