Warm Up Why do you think many of the nations of Europe wanted colonies for themselves? Make a list of reasons.

Learning Targets I will complete a packet on Imperialism. I will write a SCR on the causes and the effects of Imperialism. Essential Question What were the causes of World War I and the effects of World War I on world history?

Industrialization Review The Industrial Revolution started in Great Britain. Factories began to produce goods that people wanted. Factories used steam power to propel the engines used in manufacturing. Factories provided jobs for people.

Industrialization Review Factories were often dirty, cramped places to work. Workers usually worked six days a week. Women and children that worked in the factories and were paid less than men. If you were injured, you had to work or lose your job.

Industrialization helps lead to Imperialism Because nations are developing new industries, new markets are needed so these goods can be sold. Solution-Imperialism! Imperialism meant that strong nations had to become colonial powers. Britain and France controlled much of Africa and India was a British colony until 1947.

Factors that lead to World War I Alliances-means that nations will fight for each other Militarism-build up of large armies and militaries Imperialism-nations building up colonies Nationalism-extreme patriotism

Background These factors lead to great tension in Europe, however the great nations of Europe were at peace with each other. In June of 1914, an assassination of the Arch Duke of Austria would lead to World War I!

Spark That Ignited World War I June 28, 1914, the Archduke of Austria and his wife were murdered in Sarajevo by Gavrillo Princip, a Serbian nationalist. Within a few weeks, war breaks out all over Europe. Europe is now at war!

Learning Targets I will write a letter home from a soldier and draw a battlefield map. Essential Question What was life like in the trenches? What effect did the new weapons introduced in WWI have on the war?

Trench Warfare Very quickly the Western Front of World War I, this was the area of the war fought mainly in France, settled into trench warfare. There were hundreds of miles of trenches along the Western Front. Huge battles were fought and often there was little or no changes in the lines.

Trench Warfare What were the trenches like? Trenches were huge ditches in the ground. Troops would go out of their trench and then have to attack an enemy trench several hundreds yards away. Men would live and fight in the trenches. Trenches were dirty, often filled with water, filled with disease and rats.

Battlefield Map of WWI Create a battlefield map of World War I. Take a sheet of piece of paper and draw two sets of trenches. One on one side of the paper, the other on the other side of the paper. In the middle of the paper, create “No Man’s Land” with shell craters and dead trees.

Letter From A Soldier You will write a letter from a soldier who is living in a trench in 1917. 1) Read the article about trench warfare and then write about three of the hardships that soldiers faced in the trenches. 2) Write about three of the new weapons soldier faced in the war. 3) This should be an 11 sentence paragraph.

U. S. Troops Arrive June 1917, U.S. troops arrive in Europe. More than one million soldiers went to Europe. American’s fought in two major battles; Belleau Wood and The Argonne Forest. Over 100,000 Americans were killed in the battles.

The Treaty of Versailles Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918. January of 1919, Woodrow Wilson met with the leaders of Italy, Great Britain and France. Treaty of Versailles was signed in June of 1919. Germany had to sign the war guilt clause and had to pay damages to the victors.
