Pattern of the Genealogy in Gen 5 Vv. 1-3 open the account. –Vv. 1-2 recapitulate the creation account. –V. 3 makes clear that just as the first man and woman were made in the image and likeness of God, so their descendants are as well. A list of 10 generations, each with this pattern: –When a had lived x years, he became the father of b; a lived y years after the birth of b and had other sons and daughters. So all the days of a were x + y years, and he died. The genealogy traces the line from Adam to Noah and his sons, preparing the way for the flood account to follow. –The line of Noah will be picked up after the flood and traced down to Abraham (Gen 10-11).

Some Interesting Highlights “Mahalalel” means “praise of God.” “And Enoch walked with God, and was not, for God took him” (5:24). –Different from the way the others are described. –Head of the seventh generation from Adam (Jude 14). –“Walking with God” means living according to His ways. –Rather than “and he died”, the text says “God took him.” Same verb used later with Elijah (2 Kings 2:3). The account closes with a note of hope in the birth of Noah (5:28-32) – his name means “rest.” –Note the allusion back to 3:17.
