Worship Lesson 11, September 10 Worship Lesson 11, September 10 In Spirit and in Truth

Key Text John 4:23 “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.”

In Spirit and in Truth Initial Words {128} IN the question of Christ’s coming to earth, Mary played a crucial and pivotal role: in her womb the Savior of the world was miraculously conceived; in her womb He grew into the infant Jesus. Mary probably had no real idea of that which she was going to be a part. She knew enough to see the working of the Lord.

In Spirit and in Truth Quick Look 1. To Satan: Worship, Serve God Only (Luke 4:5-8) 2. To the Samaritan Woman: Worship in Spirit and Truth (John 4:21) 3. To the Pharisees: Stones Will Cry Out (Luke 19:39, 40)

In Spirit and in Truth 1. Worship, Serve God Only Luke 4:5-8 NTL “THEN the devil…revealed to him all the kingdoms of the world…. ‘I will give you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them…. I will give it all to you if you will worship me.’ Jesus replied, ‘The Scriptures say, “You must worship the L ORD your God and serve only him.” ’ ”

1.Worship, Serve God Only Linking the Two {130} ALL through the Old Testament, the concept of worshiping false gods and serving them is linked. Basically, you serve what you worship; hence, how important it is that you worship only the Lord.
12
It is hard to imagine someone who worships the Lord in faith, in surrender, in humility and love and fear, at the same time serving other gods, whatever form they may come in. 1.Worship, Serve God Only Linking the Two {130} Worship, then, can be a protection for us against idolatry, against serving self, sin, and all the other forces vying for our service.
13
In Spirit and in Truth 2. Worship in Spirit and Truth John 4:21-24 NLT “JESUS replied, ‘…The time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. … But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth.’”
14
2. Worship in Spirit and Truth Worshiping What You Know Not {132} HE wanted her to see that a personal relationship with her Creator and Redeemer was the foundation of worship and that the forms and traditions of her faith, which had deviated from the true religion of the Jews, were certainly not.
15
He says that the hour “now is” that all true worshipers will worship in spirit and in truth. In other words, do not look to some past glory, and do not look to some future event. The time “now is” to give the Lord the worship He deserves, and experience the love, the grace, and the salvation that He offers. 2. Worship in Spirit and Truth The True Worshipers {134}
16
2. Worship in Spirit and Truth The True Worshipers {134} from the heart sincere, deeply felt love, fear of God There is nothing wrong with emotions in worship; after all, our religion calls upon us to love God and how can love be separated from emotions? Jesus here is calling for a balanced form of worship: a worship that comes from the heart, that is sincere and deeply felt, that comes from the love and the fear of God.
17
2. Worship in Spirit and Truth The True Worshipers {134} believe, obey will truth law At the same time, God calls upon His true worshipers to worship Him “in truth.” God has revealed His will, His truth, His law—truth that we are expected to believe and obey. True worshipers will love God and from that love seek to serve Him, obey Him, and do what is right.
18
In Spirit and in Truth 3. Stones Will Cry Out Luke 19:39, 40 NKJV “AND some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, ‘Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.’ But He answered and said to them, ‘I tell you that if these would keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.’ ”
19
3. Stones Will Cry Out Worshiping at His Feet {136} CHRIST never refused their worship: 1. Three Wise Men, Matthew 2:11. 2. The Ruler, Matthew 9:18. 3. Zebedee’s Mother, Matthew 20:20. 4. Pharisees and Scribes, Mark 7:7. 5. The Eleven Disciples, Luke 24:52. 6. The Blind Man, John 9:38.
20
3. Stones Will Cry Out Worshiping at His Feet {136} The point is that Jesus be the center and focus of all our worship. Every song, every prayer, every sermon, everything that we do should, in one way or another, ultimately direct our minds toward Christ, the incarnate God who offered Himself as the sacrifice for our sins.
21
In Spirit and in Truth Final Words {138} Religion is not to be confined to external forms and ceremonies. The religion that comes from God is the only religion that will lead to God. In order to serve Him aright, we must be born of the divine Spirit.
22
In Spirit and in Truth Final Words {138} This will purify the heart and renew the mind, giving us a new capacity for knowing and loving God. It will give us a willing obedience to all His requirements. This is true worship. It is the fruit of the working of the Holy Spirit.” The Desire of Ages 189 emphasis supplied
