WOODS Woods are generally classified for construction purposes as either hardwood or softwood. Hardwoods are woods produced from the broadleaf or deciduous trees. A deciduous tree is one which loses its leaves. Softwoods, on the other hand, are woods produced by evergreens or conifers (cone bearing trees).

HARDWOODS Hardwoods are generally used for wood furniture, decorative interior panelling and as interior trim. The scarcity, high cost and beauty place these woods at a premium so that they are used for interior purposes only. Veneers of hardwood bonded onto softwood cone provide the industry with an economical use of hardwood. Many different kinds of harwood are used especially in furniture and interior wall panelling. Irregularities in tree growth and defects in the wood may provide a variation within each species.

Important Hardwoods Linden (Ihlamur) Beech (Kayın) Horn Beech (Gürgen)
Walnut (Ceviz) Oak (Meşe) Maple (Akçaağaç) Ash (Dişbudak) Poplar (Kavak) Chesnut (Kestane)

SOFTWOODS Softwoods are the evergreen, cone-bearing and needle leaved trees. They are generally used for construction to provide framing for homes, window frames, roof decking, exterior wall panelling and forms for concrete. Softwood is often laminated to serve as structural members and as plywood covering.

Important Softwoods Cypress (Servi) Pine (Çam) Fir (Köknar cinsi çam)
Silver Fir (Akçam) Yellow Fir (Sarıçam) Spruce (Ladin, alaçam)

PLYWOOD Plywood is construction material made of thin sheets of wood (veneers) bonded together with glue. Each sheet of veneer is asembled so that the grain of each layer is at right angles to the next. Plywood is stronger than solid wood of the same thickness.
12
Important Advantages of Plywood
It resist splitting and checking It does not swell It does not shrink It does not warp and twist It is easy to work with than with solid wood It can easily be bent to create curved surfaces
14
Particle Board The small particles wood form boards.
It is ideal backing material for plastic laminats and wood veneers.
16
Fiberboard MDF, HDF It is manufactured of asbestos fibers or rock wool. These mineral binders combined with a binder.
