Acute Stress Disorder:
Symptoms Starts within 1 month of trauma Lasts from 3 days to 1 month Distress and/or functioning impaired Many different symptoms possible, including Intense reactions to trauma reminders/thoughts Avoiding trauma reminders/thoughts/discussion Sleep problems Often angry/irritable Negative emotions On edge/easily started Posttraumatic Stress Disorder sometimes follows Source: DSM-5

cause: TRAUMATIC event cause: STRESSOR occurs Severe event Any severity Typical causes: Typical causes: motor vehicle accident job loss - spouse leaving - severe burns - rape - war life-threatening illness - child abuse - assault life changes – living in natural disaster - violent unsafe neighborhood death of loved one – witnessing a mass shooting PTSD may follow Resolves within months of end of stressor
