4 4 Purpose of Small Group Bible Studies In your groups brainstorm ideas of what the goal or purpose of Bible Study/Sunday School should be

5 5 Purpose of Small Group Bible Studies Possible Answers Learn major events in Bible History Lead people to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ Learn to apply scriptural principles to daily living

10 Parts of a Bible Study Lesson

11 11 Parts of a Bible Study Lesson The "Hook" Gain learners' attention Motivate them to begin thinking of the issues in the week's passage It is often a question or discussion topic which has little spiritual implication but is directed towards the topic of the lesson Example: For a lesson about The Feeding of the 5000, you might ask, "What is the biggest group you've ever fed at your house? What were some of the complications involved?"

12 12 Parts of a Bible Study Lesson The "Book" What does the passage say What facts can be found Ask the class to list people, places, statements made by someone, etc. Example: John 14:23... Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. You might ask, "What are the results of loving Jesus and obeying Him?"

13 13 Parts of a Bible Study Lesson The Look Once we know the facts stated by the passage, we work to discover the meaning of those facts We want to know the implications of the verses Ask the class questions about word meaning, reasons why we would want to heed the verses, reasons why we have trouble doing what it says, etc. Example: Romans 5:7-8 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. [8] But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. You might ask, "What lead God to do this?" or "What emotions or feelings do the truths of these verses elicit?"

14 14 Parts of a Bible Study Lesson The "Took" What changes will I make in my life What must I specifically do to apply the meaning of the passage You can ask for specific commitments... "How many of you will commit to spending at least 10 minutes every day in prayer time?"

15 15 Parts of a Bible Study Lesson The following screens have some case studies of short lesson plans Discuss among yourselves, which of the four parts is missing in the lesson Write a question or discussion topic for the missing lesson element List some reasons as to why the missing part is important

16 16 Case Study A: Lesson on John 7:31-53 What TV court shows have you watched? From verses 40 – 44, list positive and negative opinions given about Jesus. How do these negative attitudes about Jesus manifest themselves today? What do we learn from Nicodemus’ defense of Jesus in versus 50 – 53 For the abbreviated Bible study outline above, determine which lesson element is missing. Write a question or discussion topic for the missing lesson element. List reasons why that element of a lesson would be important for this example.

17 17 Case Study B: Lesson on Daniel 2 What is the best “out to eat” food you’ve ever had? Discuss reasons for God trying to teach Daniel and his friends about what they should eat? How do you think God gave them better health even though they had eaten only vegetables and water? How will you forego luxuries this week in order to put God first? For the abbreviated Bible study outline above, determine which lesson element is missing. Write a question or discussion topic for the missing lesson element. List reasons why that element of a lesson would be important for this example

18 18 Case Study C: Lesson on Jonah 2 1.List things that Jonah prayed for from inside the fish. 2.What are some reasons we seem to repent only after dire circumstances? 3.Discuss characteristics of God that cause Him to give people a second chance. 4.What people might God be sending to you this week to share the Good News? For the abbreviated Bible study outline above, determine which lesson element is missing. Write a question or discussion topic for the missing lesson element. List reasons why that element of a lesson would be important for this example

19 19 Case Study D: Lesson from Hebrews 7 1.List different kinds of legal agreements you have entered into. 2.Find reasons from verses 18 and 19 that the old covenant was set aside. 3.From verses 20 - 25 discuss what is different and better about Jesus as a new High Priest? 4.What will you do this week to make Jesus your High Priest? For the abbreviated Bible study outline above, determine which lesson element (hook, book, look, took) are missing. Write a question or discussion topic for the missing lesson element. List reasons why that element of a lesson would be important for this example

20 20 Case Study A: Lesson from John 7 There is no "Took" element. There is nothing to suggest that the learner might do in the coming days to change the way they live. Possible "Took" : Consider the claims made by Jesus -- "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink." What part of your life is "thirsty"? Trust Jesus this week to meet that specific need in your life.

21 21 Case Study B: Lesson from Daniel 2 There is no "Book" element. We need a question which will specifically elicit the facts of the events. Possible "Book" questions might include, "What experiment did Daniel want to perform with their diets?"

22 22 Case Study C: Lesson from Jonah 2 There is no "Hook" element to this lesson. We need a question to get people thinking about the passage. You might ask, "Describe a time when you were fishing and a really big one got away."

23 23 Case Study D: Lesson From Hebrews 7 This lesson is missing a "Look" element, an application of the principles of the passage. You might ask, "What are some ways that you can draw near to the Lord because of this new High Priest, Jesus?"

24 24 Importance of "The Hook" Learners need assistance to begin focusing on the topic It is also part of a "getting to know you" activity –Recall our "Favorite teacher" activity at the beginning It motivates a desire to learn more

25 25 Importance of "The Book" One of our purposes was to know the Bible We want learners to be Biblical Christians Scripture is our primary source of Truth

26 26 Importance of "The Look" Knowledge of scriptural facts alone is not sufficient Truth from God's Word has application to all our lives –All ages –All cultures –All levels of spiritual maturity

27 27 Importance of "The Took" James said, "Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror" James 1:23 (NIV) Learners need specific ways in which their lives should change as a result of Truth that has been communicated

29 29 Group Activities Consider the well know Bible story of "Daniel in the Lion's Den" in Daniel 6. Your table will be assigned to write a discussion question or activity for one of –The Hook –The Book –The Look –The Took Which would be used for teaching that lesson

30 30 Possible "Hook" Ideas Where have you seen a Lion? Draw/color a picture of a lion while the other children are on there way to class. What are some times we should pray to God? When is the best time to pray to God

31 31 Possible "Book" Ideas What did Daniel do every day? Put a series of pictures from the story in the right order Create a news program which tells the events of the story (interviews, on the scene report) What civil disobedience do we see here? What happened to people who worked against God's principles?

32 32 Possible "Look" ideas What do we learn about making right choices? When is civil disobedience condoned? What are ways in which obeying God has a positive effect on others? What are ways that God protects us?

33 33 Possible "Took" ideas This week, do what God wants you to do, even if friends try to persuade you otherwise Let's follow Daniel's example of praying every day Let's pray for our government, that they would be men and women who follow God

35 35 In the Coming Weeks … Teaching assistants –Prepare and be responsible for one of the Hook sessions in your class –For another Sunday, brainstorm with your mentoring teacher good questions for "The Look" applications of your lesson

36 36 In the Coming Weeks … Mentoring Teachers –Meet with your assistant teacher at Wednesday evening Ministry Connection –Evaluate the parts of a recent week's lesson Did it fulfill the stated purposes? Rate the effectiveness of the different parts of the lesson?
