2 Smoking – don’t get sucked in!!!  Tobacco use among adults has declined over 40% since 1965.  75% of adults DO NOT use tobacco  After a lawsuit in 1998, tobacco companies have agreed not to use cartoon characters and other methods that might attract children and teens.

3 Tobacco Addiction  Vocabulary Addiction – a physical or psychological need for a drug Physical dependence – type of addiction in which the body itself feels a direct need for a drug Psychological dependence – an addiction in which the mind sends the body a message that it needs more of a drug

4 You Can Quit!  In 2000, 70% of teen smokers said they regretted having started  44 million American adults are now former smokers  In order to quit, tobacco users have to go through withdrawal.  Withdrawal – physical and psychological symptoms that occur when someone stops using an addictive substance

5 Withdrawal  Physical Symptoms  Cravings  Headaches  Shakiness  Fatigue  Increase appetite  Nausea  Psychological Symptoms  Feeling irritable  Nervous  Anxious  Sad  Trouble thinking during day  Trouble sleeping at night
