Carbon emission decrease by solar water heating MENARID Knowledge Exchange workshop 24th to 28th of March, Hammamet, Tunisia H. Jazi National Project Manager 1
2
Content Introduction What is solar water heating system Energy, subsidies and Natural resources Objectives Method Results Public innovation Upscaling
3
Introduction The emission levels of carbon dioxide that we generate by the constant use of fossil fuel are literally killing our planet. The usage of solar energy will only provide us with a clean environment, a life where we will not have to constantly worry about the ever so reducing resources to provide us with the basic comforts of our life. Usage of solar energy varies from producing electricity to simple applications for poor people. Water heating is one of the applications that could be in line with the scope of this project.
4
What is solar water heating system Solar water heating systems use solar panels, called collectors, fitted to the roof. These collect heat from the sun and use it to heat up water which is stored in a hot water cylinder. A boiler or immersion heater can be used as a back up to heat the water further to reach the temperature you want.

7
Rational, Energy, Subsidies and Natural Resources Level of solar radiation received in Behabad is very high (almost 9 months full shiny day) With the new policies of the government on energy price, usage of cheaper and accessible sources of energy is taken more seriously by the people. One tank of liquid gas is $ US 4 and a 4 member family uses five tanks a month for water heating. Availability of liquid gas for remote areas is another problem in addition to its weight which is not easy for old people to carry.
8
Objectives Reduction of carbon emission Prevention of return of fuel wood to the energy basket Ease of use Replacement of more sustainable source of energy Training of local youth on maintenance of the system Saving money
9
Method Dissembling the old system
11
All agreement was made and permission letters were issued Old system was dissembled In the meantime village development fund was established Individual water heating systems were installed on the roof of the households Some part of the money (1/3) was paid by the project The rest was paid by local people through 10 installments Method
13
Result The system was demonstrated by 24 households which were equipped with the system Same system in Fahraj
14
Moreover It was showed that damage could be prevented This model could be repeated at least for 600 sites under the same condition, unused public bath 14
15
Self found solution Some of the people was not rich enough to pay the installment they were suggesting that direct money coming from subsidies go for the installments. They made a contract with the bank and the money goes to their found through the bank system
16
Up scaling Surrounding villages are asking for the same action Township governor decided to install 4000 water heating in same manner of MENARID
17
SWOT analysis results Strengths of your organization when the innovation has been implemented Weaknesses of your organization when the innovation has been implemented Opportunities (external factors from the environment) Threats (external factors from the environment) Making relation between local and technical people Availability of techniques in Iran Capacity building Village development fund Lack of budget to cover the total houses in the village and its ambient Willingness of the both local and governmental staffs Money from indirect subsidy Young educated people Migration of trained people 17
18
Recommendations to policy-makers to scale- up the innovation, and to remove constraints 18 Low interest loan in sake of expansion of usage of clean energy Triangle consensus method created by MENARID composed of village development group, local government and producer of water heating sets for replacement of all public solar bath with individuals. Sharing knowledge and experiences between the people who are using the system and those who doubt about its efficiency, face to face method
19
Let us discuss it ! Questions, comments and suggestions are welcome! 19
