THE WORKBOOK Excel opens an empty workbook (book1) which is like a notebook. Each sheet in the workbook is called a worksheet. The name of each worksheet displays on the sheet tab at the bottom of the workbook.

CELLS Cell – is a basic unit of a worksheet into which you enter data An intersection of a row and a column Columns are identified by letters. Rows are identified by numbers. Gridlines – horizontal and vertical lines on the worksheet it self

CELL REFERENCE Cell reference – the coordinates of the intersection of a row and column. The column letter always comes first, followed by the row number (example: B6)

ACTIVE CELLS Active cell – the cell in which you may enter data. The active cell reference appears in the name box. Fill Handle – is the small black square located in the lower-right corner of the heavy border around the active cell.

FORMATTING Relative Reference - an adjusted cell reference Merging Cells – involves creating a single cell by combining two or more selected cells
