2. Formulating Predictions Formulating predictions allows you to gain information from the text before you know what happens in the book. We make predictions all the time. When you get a letter from the bank, you may guess that it is your statement, or something relating to your bank account. When you look at a magazine cover, you can guess what some of the stories are about.

3. Formulating Predictions Making predictions gets you to start thinking about the text before you begin to read. You can make predictions by looking at the cover page, and reading the title of the book. If the book has chapters, you can look at the title of the chapters and make a prediction about what the chapters are about. If the book has pictures, you can look at all the pictures before you read, so you can get an idea about what the book is about.

4. Example This is an example of a prediction made about Book 1 – The School Lunch Room I think book 1- The School Lunch Room will be about Tommy going to his school lunch room. Tommy may encounter a mystery in the school lunch room, and he will have to solve that mystery. Tommy has a dog. His dog will help Tommy solve the mystery.

5. Example The prediction about Tommy Tales book 1 was formed by looking at the title page of the story. When you complete the assignment on Formulating Predictions, make your predictions by looking at the title page. DO NOT LOOK INSIDE THE BOOKS TO MAKE YOUR PREDICTIONS. During your lesson on Because of Winn Dixie you will formulate predictions from the title page, and then make more predictions throughout the book as you read.
