THE ART OF THE 5- PARAGRAPH PERSUASIVE ESSAY 8 TH GRADE D.W.A.

Step 1: The HOOK Start your paper with a BANG! Imagine a world where kids go to school at 8am and come home at 9pm. No goofing off or fun is allowed. Adults wouldn’t give us free time or let us goof off unless they remembered what it was like being young.

Step 2: The THESIS Most adults do not forget what it is like being young no matter what age.

Step 2b: The Evidence They give kids free time, they [even] act like kids themselves sometimes, but they just have greater responsibilities.

Step 3: The “Ease Out” Therefore[,] we can be sure that most adults do not forget what it is like being young. [Obviously, adults don’t forget what it’s like to be young; otherwise, life would be a lot tougher on us kids.]

Step 4: Evidence 1 (Restated) Adults give kids breaks and free time. Steps 5-7: Supports A, B, C They have kept summer break even though it[‘]s not needed. Summer break was for farm kids to go to work during the summer. Schools ar[e]n’t all day long. Also, kids get leg room [;] [they’re] allowed to goof off once every now and then.

Step 8: The Transition Choose ONE: (but only if it’s appropriate) First Furthermore Another Besides Although Consequently Additionally Next In Addition to Instead of Rather than Similarly Therefore On the other hand However Finally

Step 9: Evidence 2 (Restated) Adults will act like kids at times, too. Steps 10-12: Supports A, B, C My dad would go dive through the waves and make sandcastles whenever my family would go to the beach. My mom will dance to music. I see adults do kid[-]like things all [of] the time.

Step 13: The Transition Choose ONE: (but only if it’s appropriate) First Furthermore Another Besides Although Consequently Additionally Next In Addition to Instead of Rather than Similarly Therefore On the other hand However Finally

Step 14: Evidence 3 (Restated) One of the reasons adults seem like they have forgotten [what] it was like [to be] a kid is that they have greater responsibilities. [But, as I’ve said before, greater responsibilities do not hinder their ability to remember the joys of childhood.] Steps 15-17: Supports A, B, C They have to make a living [but they still enjoy their free time]. They go out and work all day to earn money to live [and some of that money is spent on frivolity and fun!] Most kids don’t have that kind of pressure [so they think that when adults get frustrated with their responsibilities that they have forgotten what it is like to be a kid. This is obviously not the case.]

Step 18: The Concluding Transition Choose ONE: (but only if it’s appropriate) In conclusion As you can see To summarize It is clear that Obviously For these reasons As I said Clearly

Step 19: Thesis (Restated) It is clear that most adults do not forget what being a kid is like. Step 20: Summarize Evidence 1, 2, 3 [They allow us to have the freedoms that they once enjoyed.] They have their fun times [too]. They [simply] have to work harder than kids[, so they may get frustrated at times.]

Step 21: The Clincher End your paper with a BANG! [Kids, give your parents a break! For all that they do for you, all that they give to you, adults should be thanked and congratulated that they remember what it was like to be a kid like us!]
