2 This is of a time of great instability where the old Monarchies of Europe have fallen after hundreds of years of rule and the people are given two choices The Socialist Communists and the Fascist. War, Peace and Politics

3  The artists` works were greatly influenced by the political climate surrounding them  Some artist were political activist  Their artwork as a result reflected their political and philosophical beliefs

4 War, Peace and Politics  They brought about a new way of looking at the world  This new way of looking was used to counter the desensitization brought about by the invention of cameras  They did not look into their imaginations but rather took what they saw from the world and conveyed it through their perspective.

Oil on Canvas.  To depict the bombing of the town of Guernica by the Rebel Franco Nationalists  This bombing was done by the German Luftwaffe and the Italian Fascist Avaizione Legionaria, at the request of Francisco Franco  The point of the attack was to scare there was no tactical gain  Shocked by the senseless killings Picasso in one month created the piece in an achromatic colour scheme ( grey, black and white)

10  Known for his advocacy for peace  He viewed children and women as the victims of war  This was the logo for the World Peace Congress in 1949  He made several copies of the Dove of Peace until his death.  His father had raised and kept doves in his family homes and studios  He named his daughter who was born at the night of the funeral Paloma the Spanish for Dove

12  The piece was created in one night- the process of destruction & recreation  Broke away from surrealism which was looking below the realist surface of life to existentialism a contemplation on the very basics of human existence and this lack of meaning.  It is one of several in a series of extremely thin humans and animals cast out of bronze. A representation of the horrors of concentration camps.  He struggled greatly with the meaning of life.

15  Located at the San Francisco Art Institute as one of 3 murals in the Bay area  Many of the individuals are the portraits of artist and patrons Rivera was associated with  Due to his political views the Institute requested the piece not to take on a political subject matter but as the piece progress the central figure went from a mother figure to a working man with a Red medal  This shows his support for the Communist ideals
