Diego was born in 1886 in Guanajuato, Mexico to a wealthy family. From the age of ten, Rivera studied art at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City. In 1907, Diego left Mexico to study art in Europe. He studied the work of many artists in France, Spain and Italy. In 1922, Diego painted his first mural in the auditorium of the National Preparatory School in Mexico City. He went on to paint countless murals throughout Mexico. These murals dealt with Mexican society and often the Aztecs were a focus of his work. He was known for his style based on large, simplified figures and bold colors. In 1927, Diego left Mexico to travel and work abroad. He created murals in cities such as Moscow, San Francisco and New York. In 1933 he returned to Mexico to continue painting.
