Board Priorities 1.Access to Success ( modest growth, retention, cost, etc.) 2.Public Affairs Integration ( events, assessment, eJournal, etc. ) 3.Engaged Inquiry ( faculty research ) 4.Partners for Progress ( reaching beyond campus ) 5.Valuing & Supporting People ( compensation, diversity, etc. ) 6.Responsible Stewardship ( use of funds ) 7.Athletics 8.West Plains Integration http://www.missouristate.edu/president/goals.htm
17
Accreditation Issues (HLC) “Public Affairs” in graduate programs o Probably done in most programs, but not promoted as public affairs (applied research, internships, etc.) o Talk about what you do in PA terms o Add a statement to your Catalog pages indicating connection to PA Parallel classes (400-600, 500-600, etc.) o Different requirements for graduate students. o “graduate-level” experience for graduate students o Higher-level thinking
18
Graduate Recruitment Expanded college fair schedule (see Updates) Attend undergraduate research conferences for recruiting purposes (McNair & SACNAS) Provide mini-grant funds again to graduate programs for recruiting activities College-level Virtual Fairs (see Updates)
19
My Priorities Tell “our story” better: “value-added” = Good education + low cost more marketing activities More well-qualified diverse students McNair Graduate Assistantships (Graduate College) Graduate Scholarships for Enhancing Diversity (University) Market/promote graduate programs New programs Interdisciplinary/individualized programs have no other “home” Get promising students into new graduate scholarships Improved work-flow
20
Policy Setting Assigning/changing “catalog year” for students with hiatus in coursework Total number of credits for a degree that can be earned prior to admission (senior permission, transfer, post-bacc, mixed credit) “General” Mixed Credit Accelerated certificates (w/ & w/o accelerated Masters)??
21
Policy/Process Changes “Projected Course Offerings” – now visible on the web for students (https://mis.missouristate.edu/Student/pco )https://mis.missouristate.edu/Student/pco “Degree Audits” likely to soon include graduate students Turnitin.com vs. SafeAssign Apply to Graduate
22
Reminders – Admissions “Start-semester” is critical in Banner Applications close after the first week of a semester. Admissions closes after census date (4 weeks) Don’t admit someone for a semester in which they are already registered as a post-bacc student. Adding /changing a program requires a new application or contact Michael Edwards. Accelerated Masters candidates must apply for the semester they will truly be a grad student, not when they want to take “mixed credit” classes as a senior
23
Reminders – International Students Need to take at least 6 credits face-to-face Summer classes “conditional admissions” for ELI students Visa issues are complex Contact International Services with questions
24
Reminders – Forms & Paperwork 9 credits of C or lower Letters from the Graduate College Removal from program when exceeded Post-baccalaureate students (non-degree seeking) Registration holds after 9 credits Apply to graduate (or complete a certificate) 8 year limits
25
Reminders – Graduate Assistantships 4 semesters (Fall/Spring) 3.00 GPA 6 graduate credits hours Summer fee waivers ¼-time GA (with approval) Dismissals (firing) Late starts Rec center, Health Center fees 1000 hr. counting
