Linking Data Quality with Action Pre-training Webinar Larry Condelli & AIR Training Team June 3, 2014
2
Ensuring high quality data is an ongoing process ◦ Not just a one-time event but requires constant vigilance due to staff turnover, changing requirements ◦ No NRS on this topic for four years ◦ NRS cohort changes, new measures, have revealed data quality issues 2
3
Goals of the training: ◦ Focus states on data quality issues ◦ Provide approaches and tools for examining data ◦ Provide approaches for improving data quality and program performance ◦ Promote the quality and use of NRS data for accountability and program improvement 3
4
Identify common data quality issues Identify tools and approaches for improving data quality Practice problem-solving through the SCAMPER method Create a plan for improving data quality at the state and local level 4
5
5 Chapter 2: Understand Data Quality What problems do we have? What are our data processes? Explore Data, data systems, procedures and training Chapter 3: Motivation and Problem Solving How can we motivate staff? How can we solve our problems? Promote data use, data use learning communities, SCAMPER Chapter 4: Implement Change How do we take action and get it done? Action model, setting goals & measures, inclusive, holding staff responsible
6
Importance of critically reviewing data ◦ What to look for and how ◦ Illustrated with NRS tables Central role of your data system and error checks Importance of procedures and staff training Enhancing staff motivation to be engaged in data 6
7
Data systems + Procedures + Motivation ________________ Data quality 7
8
Once you find problems how do you fix them to improve data quality? SCAMPER Method 8
9
Creative problem solving ◦ Checklist of thought provoking questions ◦ Everything that exists is a modification of something that already exists ◦ Remove all constraints in the problem solving process 9
10
Once you have a plan how to you make sure it gets done? 4 Disciplines approach 10
11
To effectively create change in behavior there has to be a focus and you have to have one shared, achievable goal 11
12
12 Step 1: Focus on an Important Goal Step 2: Identify Measures Step 3: Create an Effective Way to Track Progress to Your Goal Step 4: Establish Accountability
13
Register and make your hotel reservations immediately Review training guide and agenda Bring at least one laptop per team 13
14
Describe state procedures for ensuring data quality from the time of local data collection to submission of NRS data to OCTAE ◦ Brief, no more than 1 page, can be bulleted list ◦ Email to nrs@air.org by June 9 or at least 2 weeks before the trainingnrs@air.org
15
Review your NRS data and 2013 data quality checklist (DQC) ◦ Bring a copy of the DQC to the training ◦ Identify a data quality problem you want to address at the training, e.g.: Data entry timing, missing data Testing issues Cohort identification You may change it at the training 15
