What is Strategic Planning? ► Strategic planning is a tool used to help any organization - including academic departments - do a better job Teaching and student learning; research and scholarly activity; service Managing personnel and resources ► A process to help all members of the organization focus on the same goals

Strategic Planning and Long-Range Planning ► Should be based on long-range vision Department, College, University ► Strategic plan helps guide your department over the next year or two May be for longer time frame but usually one to two years Also helps you determine if you got to where it is you want to go

Strategic Planning and Long-Range Planning ► Long-range planning assumes reliability and stability of current knowledge in meeting long-range goals ► Strategic planning assumes your department must respond to changeability and unpredictability ► How will your department best use its resources in a changing environment?
