Workshop Objectives Participants will rate their current classroom management practices Presenters will discuss the various facets of classroom management Presenters will demonstrate and provide strategies and resources to improve classroom management

Classroom management causes the most fear and consternation in new teachers, and not so new teachers too!

Maintaining good order in the classroom is one of the most difficult tasks facing new or experienced teachers!

There are many different practices that can be used for good classroom management.

Classroom management is a skill that not only must be learned, but practiced daily.

As with all classroom management practices, take into account the age and personality of your class as a group, of you as a teacher and ADAPT.

Characteristics of Effective Classroom Managers Provides a safe, secure environment Knows his/her students Is organized Establishes and clearly communicates rules, goals and expectations Responds predictably and consistently

Advice from those who have been there: Build positive relationships of mutual respect with students. Teaching behavior is much more effective than managing behavior. Don’t commit “assumicide” and think your students have the prior knowledge to meet your behavioral expectations. Teach and practice each behavior.

More Advice Don’t give up. Classroom management is an ongoing process. Be consistent. Start tough and then lighten up. “Borrow” ideas and keep adding to your bag of tricks and soon you’ll have the repertoire of a seasoned teacher.
