- For every person who dies from a smoking-related disease, 20 more people suffer with at least one serious illness from smoking (CDC 2009). - Worldwide, tobacco use causes more than 5 million deaths per year, and current trends show that tobacco use will cause more than 8 million deaths annually by 2030 (Surgeon General 2009). Definition : Lung cancer is a disease of uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung. This growth may lead to metastasis, which is the invasion of adjacent tissue and infiltration beyond the lungs. The vast majority of primary lung cancers are carcinomas of the lung, derived from epithelial cells. Key Facts About Lung Cancer -Primary carcinoma of the lung is the leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women. -It accounts for approximately 32% of cancer deaths in men and 25% in women. -Current or former cigarette smokers make up approximately 90% of patients with lung cancer. -Men who smoke one pack a day increase their risk 10 times compared with non-smokers. -Men who smoke two packs a day increase their risk more than 25 times compared with non-smokers. -The more you smoke and the longer you smoke, the greater your risk. -Of the 180,000 people diagnosed in the United States alone each year, 86% will die within 5 years of diagnosis. -Chemicals and compounds in tobacco smoke make it cancerous and the cause of other harmful health effects of smoking. -- COPD is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease In COPD, less air flows in and out of the airways because of one or more of the following: - The airways and air sacs lose their elastic quality. - The walls between many of the air sacs are destroyed. - The walls of the airways become thick and inflamed. - The airways make more mucus than usual, which tends to clog them -- COPD, also known as emphysema and chronic bronchitis, is a very serious disease, and the fourth leading cause of death in the United States (CDC 2009). - Emphysema is breathlessness caused by damage to the air sacs (alveoli) - Chronic Bronchitis is coughing with a lot of mucus that continues for at least three months. There are various ways you can die from smoking. - Cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, lung and bladder -Secondhand smoke is also dangerous to health, in fact its estimated to cause 3,000 lung cancer deaths per year in America (CDC 2009). Just think….. Would you want to face any of these diseases or conditions and possibly even die just to smoke a cigarette? JUST A THOUGHT…..

In Conclusion: By smoking a cigarette, you could develop Lung Cancer, COPD, and possibly Death. You’re hurting yourself, and others around you. & All the money spent on buying cigarettes can be used to buy other things, (or pay your tuition! ) CONCLUSION
