What is the BRC Global Standard scheme?

In recognition of an increasingly global supply chain, the standard has dropped its Britishness and retail foci. BRC Global Standards Global Standard For Food Safety Issue 5 Requirements Senior Management Commitment HACCP Food Safety & Quality Management System Site standards Product Control Process Control Personnel It is founded on 2 key principles: 1)_Senior management commitment – without which any food safety management system is worthless 2) HACCP – Internationally recognised food safety management principles 3) Policies and Manual; i.e. Standard Stuff e.g. Organisation (Structure & responsibility); Internal Audit; Document Control ; Traceability/ withdrawal/recall; Complaints; Purchasing; Customer Focus 4)General GMP on premises including focus on security (cf. bio security/ terrorism and theft) & chemical and physical product contamination control 5) Product development (N.B. Most common reason for issues); special handling requirements – increased focus on allergens and Identity Preserved Materials (Food Fraud BIG BUSINESS); foreign body detection, packaging, inspection and laboratory testing. 6) Control of operations; Quantity control; Calibration 7) Training; personal hygiene, protective clothing, access & movement

BRC Global Standards Global Standard For Food Safety Issue 5 Fundamentals Senior Management Commitment and continual improvement Food Safety Plan Internal Audits Corrective and Preventive action Traceability Layout, Product Flow and Segregation Handling requirements for Specific Materials Control of operations Training Product certification depends on continued compliance and certain requirements have been designated FUNDAMENTAL. These relate to aspects that are crucial to the establishment and operation of a robust food quality and safety operation. 9 Fundamental clauses have been identified. 1)_Senior management commitment – without which any food safety management system is worthless 2) Speaks for itself! Greater focus on identifying the potential hazards – not just microbiological 3) Reviewing ongoing performance and 4) correcting it- should also speak for itself 5) A legal requirement- without it comes the lack of ability to effectively withdraw or recall harmful material from the supply chain 6) Speaks for itself! 7)Increased focus on allergens and Identity Preserved Materials (Food Fraud BIG BUSINESS) 8) Control of operations ( System must be embedded in what happens/ System must be reflected in practice)- Are you doing what you said you were doing 9) Training -

BRC Global Standards Global Standard For Food Safety Issue 5 Merits Basis for GFSI Benchmark First Standard Approved by GFSI Product Categories Product/process technology based Linked to fields of audit & auditor competency Standardised Report Format Auditor Qualifications GFSI is the International Benchmarking process for Food Safety Management Systems, providing cost efficiency through common acceptance of GFSI recognised standards. The BRC standard provided the basis for development of the GFSI benchmark. Not surprisingly, it was the first food safety standard to be approved by GFSI.

Not currently recognised by retailers or GFSI.
