History: Pathways to Success Result of Kentucky legislative House Bill 1: University of Louisville to become more research oriented. Community concerned about access when UofL raised admission standards. UofL and JCTC form partnership aimed at efficient and effective use of institutional resources.

HISTORICAL PRESEPECTIVE OF PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS 83% of denied students enroll at other institutions of that 46% enrolled JCTC Transition year Staff hired/JCTC office opened Information session offered on campus KY House Bill 1 U of L becomes research oriented Admissions standards raised JCTC and UL Planning committee established PASSPORT instituted Second counselor and office location added after participants exceeded 250 78% of denied students enroll at other institutions of that 48% enrolled JCTC Participants list multiplied 7 fold from 2001 Spring 2005 program open to all JCTC students 19981998-20002000-20012001-20022002-20032003-2004 2004- 2005

Results of increased admission standards Increased number of denied students. Pathways established to provide alternative access to University. Students encouraged to attend community college for 12 semester hours and guaranteed admission after 12 college credit hours. Information session developed.

Denied Letters from admission office and Pathway sent to students. Pathways flyer included in second letter. “How do I begin” included in Pathways letter and directions to website. Denied student invited to Information session on UL campus.

Information Sessions Parent /student attend for detailed information on “How do I Begin”. Emphasis on the value of starting at community college. Walk through of step by step admission/orientation process at JCTC. All Pathways staff available for individual follow up questions/concern after presentations.

Pathways Requirements Complete JCTC GE 101 Strategies for Academic Success. Complete developmental work identified by COMPASS placement. Complete 12 transferable credit hours. Sign a program “Consent Agreement” and complete PASSPORT activities.

Pathways Requirements cont. Complete and submit an Intent to Transfer form with Pathways Advisor. Schedule a meeting with the Pathways Director of Admission and Transfer on UofL campus.

Student Comments/Perspective Jeremy: The Pathways experience made my transition from a community college to UofL a lot smoother than if I had no help at all. Michael: Just good to have someone at UofL who cares about me after my transfer from the community college. Samual: Thank you for everything and thank for being there for me. Bob: So grateful to have you in my life. Jennifer: Thank you – you helped me find my place in college (after the transfer) and gave me the motivation to push through the difficulties and stressful situations in my life. Samantha: Pathways helped me reach my goal – thank you. Jon: I counted on your help with the transfer and then while at UofL. Sara: Smooth transition to UofL – you guys were always in my corner. LaKesha: from being denied to UofL to graduate school – thank you!
