What is naturopathic medicine?

Six Fundamental Principals 1. The Healing power of nature 2. Identify and treat the cause 3. First do no harm 4. Doctor as Teacher 5. Treat the whole person 6. Prevention

The Healing power of nature  Our bodies have an innate ability to heal on their own, given the right tools.  Improving the quality of food choices, providing nutrients that our body needs to not only function, but function at it's best.

Identify and treat the cause  Treating the cause of a diseased state instead of treating the symptoms of a diseased state.  Always asking “why?”  Chronic sinus infections  Anemia

First do no harm  least invasive treatments to minimize risk and use the least amount of intervention  Individualized treatment plans per patient, avoiding cookbook treatments  Do our best not to suppress symptoms  Fever, eczema

Doctor as Teacher  We spend a lot of time educating patients –  What is happening in their body  Teaching them healthier lifestyles  Letting them know why we make specific recommendations

Treat the whole person  Illness comes from imbalances on multiple levels (physical, spiritual, emotional, social, and environmental)

Prevention  Prevention and wellness is key to achieving and maintaining optimal health.  Evaluate personal and family history as well as vulnerability to achieve better health.

What does an initial consultation include?

The Initial Visit  Takes approximately 1.5-2 hours  Thorough history  Physical exam based on health issues  Discussing valuable laboratory testing  Designing a treatment protocol with the patient that includes realistic goals and recommendations.

History  Health concerns  Medical history and significant exposures for themselves and close relatives  Lifestyle (occupation, stress, support, meditation, exercise, sleep, energy, food choices, bowel habits, etc)

Physical Examination  Regular physical exams  vitals, system oriented exams  Functional medicine exams  Reflexes in the Achilles tendon to assess thyroid sufficiency  Pupil dilation in response to light to evaluate adrenal sufficiency  Looking for grey bubbles behind the T.M. to assess for food or environmental sensitivities

Labs  General blood work - reference ranges are usually tighter for prevention  Fasting glucose <86  Hba1c = 4.5-5  Cholesterol – High vs. Low and why?  Functional Medicine Kits - blood, urine, saliva and/or stool samples

Functional Medicine Labs  Hormone levels  Adrenal function  Liver function  Gastrointestinal function  Neurotransmitter testing  Allergy testing  Cardiovascular Health Markers  Heavy Metals

Types of therapies  Clinical Nutrition  Food supplements  Lifestyle counseling  Botanical Medicine  Homeopathic remedies  Physical medicine  Hydrotherapy

Individualization Each Person Leaves with an individualized treatment plan that takes into consideration their personal history, family history and health goals. This may encompass one or multiple laboratory recommendations and therapy options.
