Moved to Dyess, Arkansas at the age of 3 Farmed over 20 acres of cotton with his family

3 “Getting the rhythm” Music was an escape from the hardship
Picked up the guitar at age 12 Mother put him in singing lessons After 3 lessons he was done

4 Air force After graduating high school he joined the Air Force
Basic training in Texas where he met his wife Vivian Stationed in Landsberg, West Germany Wrote “Folsom Prison Blues”

5 The Tennessee Two Moved to Memphis Tennessee
Formed a band with two mechanics Marshall Grant and Luther Perkins

6 Sun Records Cash and his band made an unannounced visit for an audition Made his first record with “Hey Porter” His second “Cry, Cry, Cry” was number 14 on the charts 1956 he wrote “Walk the Line” which sold over 2 million copies

8 From Sun to Columbia Records
By the early 1960s, Johnny Cash relocated his family to Ventura, California Left Sun for Columbia Records in 1958 and was a musical superstar. Cash was on the road 300 nights a year, barnstorming the country with a barrage of popular hits including Ring of Fire (1963) and Understand Your Man (1964).
