What is a DoS Attack DoS Attack (Denial of Service Attack) A Denial of Service Attack is Often used by hackers to slow a computer system or stop a server from serving its users by crashing it.

How is it Done? A Denial of Service Attack is done by a computer system by constantly sending packets of data to the server in order to slow the service to other users. A DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service Attack) is when multiple computer systems DoS together which is much more effective in slowing or Crashing a server.

Why is it Done? A DoS/DDoS Attacks can be done to slow or crash a server. Often DoS/DDoS Attacks are used along side a form of virus to gain access to restricted parts of the server e.g. so that the “hacker” can gain access to restricted files or to gain access to a users account

How to Prevent One Rate limit your router to prevent your Web server being overwhelmed. Add filters to tell your router to drop packets from obvious sources of attack. Timeout half-open connections more aggressively. Drop spoofed or malformed packages Set lower SYN, ICMP, and UDP flood drop thresholds.
