About the Five Themes It was developed by the National Council for Geographic Educators. WHY? To provide a framework for the presentation of geographic materials.

Region World divided into regions Rocky Mountain Region Roads & Railroads Cotton Belt Region

Region An area with common characteristics and its surrounding area Formal Region A region that has a formal boundry Examples include states, cities, stores, neighborhoods, Functional Region A region that does not have formal boundaries Examples include culture regions, climate regions, physical feature regions

Map Skills Great Circle Compass Rose A great circle that connects any two points on the earth is always the shortest distance between the two points.

Latitude Parallel lines Same distance apart never touch East and West of Equator Imaginary lines Divides globe Northern & Southern Hemispheres Lines get shorter as they near the poles

Longitude Same length Run North & South Each line intersects both poles Prime Meridian = 0 Arbitrarily selected all other lines measured for this one
