NURSING PROFESSIONS IN BC Registered Nurses (RN) **our focus today** 3-4 year degree (depends on the school, the way the program is structured AND number of credits required beforehand) Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPN) 3 year diploma or 4 year degree Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) 1-2 year certificate/diploma Nurse Practitioner Master’s degree (Post RN)

Bachelor of Science in Nursing Programs DIRECT ENTRY Admitting students straight out of high school POST-SECONDARY CREDIT ENTRY Admitting students who have completed certain post-secondary courses required for entry into the nursing program or a certain number of post-secondary credits This seems to be the direction that many schools in the Lower Mainland are heading… BRIDGING ENTRY FOR LPNs Licensed Practical Nurses continuing their education to become an RN

Admission Requirements Admission requirements (courses/marks required/admission averages) vary from school to school General admission requirements AND program admission requirements Deadlines vary / application timelines vary Single or multiple intakes (applications vary) Prepare to apply for MULTIPLE schools Competitive entry—take best applicants First qualified, first admitted—meet requirements then admitted (often there are waitlists) OTHER REQUIREMENTS (other than grades) need to be met prior to acceptance / program start

DIRECT ENTRY PROGRAMS Specific high school courses required Minimum percentages must be met Competitive/selective entry = higher marks than the minimum required First qualified, first admitted = meet requirements and then admitted (often there are waitlists) Entrance requirements/averages are generally lower outside of the Lower Mainland (higher population in LM = more competition for spots)

Programs That Require Post-Secondary Credits for Admission each program will require that you take certain courses/minimum # of credits in order to be eligible to apply for admission You will need to enroll in a school that offers the courses or the equivalent courses required for each program that you hope to apply for Check course transferability using the BC Transfer Guide (www.bctransferguide.ca)www.bctransferguide.ca Ex. Douglas Biology 1103 & 1203 = Kwantlen Biology 1160 & 1260 Speak with program advisors about transferability of courses Take the courses/course equivalents Meet / beat the required marks for each course Complete “other requirements” as needed Apply for programs when ready

(missing course, unsatisfactory grades, missing certification etc) Minimum may not be enough…(competition, space etc) It is YOUR responsibility to check the requirements!
