2 Hades Lineage : Son of Cronus and Rhea; Brother of Poseidon and Zeus; Husband of Persephone Symbol: Helm of Darkness; Cerberus; Scepter Powers: Common attributes of gods; controls the dead, wealth and riches; invisibility Weaknesses: Passionate over Persephone; easily upset and vengeful Identification/description: King of the Dead; also known as Pluto, God of Wealth Important Events: Titan Wars, Abduction of Persephone, Twelve Labors of Hercules Allusions: Disney’s Hercules; the element, Plutonium; the planet, Pluto; “The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe; the painting, “The Rape of Persephone” by Christoph Schwartz

5 The Styx Lineage: Eldest daughter of Oceanus and Tethys; mother of Nike (victory), Zelos (rivalry), Kratos (strength), and Bis (force) Symbol: The River Styx Powers: The River Styx is where dead souls cross while making their journey from land of the living to dead; it is a sacred river which the gods swear on Weaknesses: Identification/ Description: Goddess of the Underworld River Styx, a nymph Important Events: The Titan Wars, where she was a supporter of Zeus Allusions: Disney’s Hercules, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Achilles

6 Charon Lineage: Son of Erebus and Nyx Symbol: Boat, Charon’s Obol Powers: Transports souls across the River Styx, ferryman of the Underworld Weaknesses: Orpheus’s song; coins Identification/ Description: He is an aged boatman of Hades, who only receives souls and transports them across the River Styx. Important Events: Some of the myths that Charon were mentioned in are associated with: Orpheus, Hercules, and Dionysus. 7 Cerberus Lineage: Offspring of Typhon and Echidna, sibling of the Lernaean Hydra, Orthrus and Chimera Symbol: Three Headed Dog Powers: strength, immortality, size, guards the Underworld Weaknesses: Orpheus’ song and lyre, honey cakes Identification/ Description: A three- headed, dragon- tailed that protects the doors to the Underworld and permits spirits to enter and leave. Important Events: Twelve Labors of Hercules Allusions: Cerberus Capital Management, Homer’s Illiad, Disney’s Hercules, Percy Jackson, Fluffy from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

8 Pan Lineage: Son of Hermes, spouse of Syrinx and the sibling of satyrs, Laertes, Circe, and Maenads Symbol: Pan Pipes (flute), goat Powers: common attributes of gods, a musician, lusty, he is the panic felt when one is in a dark place, causes fear Weaknesses: sexual desires (lust), ugly Identification/ Description: God of Shepherds and Flocks, of mountain wilds, hunting and rustic music. Pan has the appearance of part man and goat; born in Arcadia. Important Events: The Titan Wars, Echo Myth, and the Wanderings of Demeter Allusions: the word, “panic”; “The Great God Pan” by Arthur Machen; “The Lawnmower’s Man” by Stephen King; Peter Pan; the painting, “Pan and the Syrinx” by Francois Boucher
