FISHERIES IN BC

HISTORY - Thousands of years ago, the native peoples of BC were fishing with nets and spears -After settlers came, they made homes and found fish was an abundant resource -The easy to catch fish named cod was healthy and lasted long if kept cold -Boatloads of people came for this fish -They used small boats and rods to catch them -Then moved to large boats and used a method called longlines -They hovered lines with hooks near the bottom of the ocean with a bunch of hooks

MORE HISTORY -They used a large net to catch herring and mackerel and they would trap large schools of fish -At Canada's confederation of authority over the fisheries, and set up the Department of Marine and Fisheries -After WW2 new techniques were discovered which caused some overfishing -Cod was getting scarce the Department

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT -Made of commercial fishing, aquaculture, sport fishing and seafood processing -Sport fishing makes the most money -provides economic benefits to the British Columbian and Canadian governments -Commercial fishing brings in millions of dollars every year -Sport fishing brings in loads of tourists every year and makes millions for companies -Stabilizes BC economy

MORE OF WHY ITS IMPORTANT -Because with just a little effort you can create pounds of food for sale -Creates millions of jobs from complex to simple -Some jobs are fisherman or working at a fishing company -Values of fish cod 359 million, herring 85 million, shellfish 500 million -Can be a sport, a job and a hobby -Fisheries protect overfishing

WHY IS OVERFISHING A PROBLEM TO SOCIETY? -25% Of the worlds fish stocks are depleted -52% is fully exploited -We are loosing species and ecosystems -Fish are important in the food web -With fewer fish/no fish the whole ocean would fail -We are in risk of losing a valuable food source many depend upon for social, economical or dietary reasons -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pygNPwccgGM#t=65https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pygNPwccgGM#t=65 -In 2048 it is said that all species we fish will be extinct

ALL THESE ANIMALS WOULD DIE

OVERFISHING? -What is happening is the fish are being fished to extinction - The practice of commercial and non-commercial fishing which depletes a fishery by catching so many adult fish that not enough remain to breed and replenish the population -Fishing with a sufficiently high intensity to reduce the breeding stock levels to such an extent that they will no longer support a sufficient quantity of fish for sport or commercial harvest

WHAT IS CAUSING OVERFISHING? -fishing methods and other equipment that catch too much fish to a degree that they are endangered. -When fishermen put their big nets to the bottom of the ocean and they catch seabirds, youngfish, corals and invertebrates like starfish, crabs, sea urchins, brittle stars, mollusks, sponges and worms they are usual damaged or hurt but they throw them back in to the ocean anyway -This messes up the food chain and predators cannot get their food as easily -Over capacity of the world also causes it because people need to eat and there is just not enough food

HOW CAN WE STOP OVERFISHING?? -Lower the demand for fish by not eating it so much -If you see illegal fishing report it to the police -There are other ways to get protein than fish -prevent the unintentional killing and disposal of fish, crustaceans and other oceanic life not part of the target catch -Protect the spawning and nursing grounds of fish/delicate sea floor -Spread the word to friends and families
