Power for Positive Change Webinar for DKG Chapter Presidents Texas State Organization April 28, 2015

For Your Information San Antonio LDCP Meeting – Thursday, June 25 from 1-3 PM, Lone Star Ballroom Crowdfunding Internet Sites Charity Blossom info@charityblossom.orginfo@charityblossom.org Criteria for Choosing a Crowdfunding site Succession Planning

Membership Success Kudos to Shirl Hawes And Texas Chapters Who have tried the New Program for Gaining Members

DKG Membership Summary 4 Nita R Scott

DKG Membership Summary 5 The number of dropped memberships is larger than the number of new memberships each year. Nita R Scott

International Dropped Member Survey Members for whom an email address is available are sent a link to a Survey Monkey survey at the time the membership is dropped 1,019 women responded to the survey from 2012 – 2015(to date)

Notable Quotations on Being Dropped  I would just like to say thank you for noticing that I have done this. I have been disappointed that there has been NO response from my local chapter. I would have thought they could have responded to my email in some way.  I just joined in September. How could I be dropped?

Checkpoints Does your chapter have a procedure for contacting members who have not paid dues by the “drop date?” Do you provide multiple ways to pay dues? Who makes the contact and how? Does your chapter have a procedure for communicating with members after they drop?

The Good News 67% of those responding to the survey said they were either extremely satisfied or satisfied with their experience as a member of DKG 68% responded favorably to the question: If asked, how likely would you be to reinstate your membership? (Annie Calling)

Nita R Scott 10 A Different Perspective

The Information that Gives Us POWER for Positive Change In answer to the question: what was your primary reason for dropping your membership in DKG? Family and personal reasons 41% Professional Responsibilities 11% Moved 9% Dues too High (vs. value)7% Dues too High (financial challenge) 8% Chapter not meeting needs 11% Meeting times incompatible and inflexible 4%

Comments on Chapter Not Meeting Needs/Meeting Times Inflexible Conflicts with others in chapter – culture (diversity) Unable to attend meetings - structure Did not feel a part of the group – culture (diversity) Meeting venues too costly (meals) - structure Lack of relevant programs/projects – culture (diversity) Financial stress (dues and fundraising) - structure

Notable Quotes on Chapter Not Meeting Needs Quicker, more interesting meetings with opportunities to learn from seasoned teachers. I am interested in networking with peers and discussing educational topics. I appreciate the social events, but find it difficult to make time for meal functions wine tastings, etc. I was also looking for a way to get involved in giving back to my community through volunteering. I never bonded with the women there and they never let me in.

Specifics on Professional Relevance and Impact Programs – lack of professional relevance Too much fundraising and emphasis on frivolous details like menu choices and folder colors Community impact – want involvement in projects, not just giving money

Notable Quotes on Professional Relevance and Impact More use of technology, more members currently in profession, more emphasis on networking I wasn’t involved very long in the Society but I would have liked to be more active in influencing political policies and decisions affecting teachers and education The majority of our chapter were retired teachers; therefore they had little understanding of what was required of teachers now. When I joined I thought we would focus on ways to be a better teacher and skills that would help me survive the challenges of being a teacher

Specifics of Family and Personal Responsibility Illness of member or spouse Young children Older parents Too many other responsibilities; DKG does not give ROI

Professional Responsibilities New mandates and responsibilities in profession Longer working hours Difficult administrators More paperwork

Notable Quotes on Professional Responsibilities My experience was that the Society was more of a social club. The committee I was on did not seem to want my input or help at all. I felt like a visiting guest rather than a member. Maybe somehow make it known to current teachers that there are advocates out there who support us would be nice. We feel terribly alone most days. The Society could be more relevant if there were topics pertaining to educators such as professional development. My chapter was purely social. For me the meetings were often too long and they didn’t help me to become a better teacher.

Checkpoints Is your chapter planning programming of a professional nature? Is your chapter flexible about attendance/meeting times? How many of your meetings are purely social occasions? How much of your meeting is taken up with minutia?

Structure and Culture Structure How the chapter is organized Flexibility Attuned to various needs of members Succession Planning Culture Collegial vs. Top-down leadership Kindness factor Equality factor Professional vs. Sorority atmosphere

Diversity Generational diversity – continuity and change Working and retired members Religious diversity Ethnic and cultural diversity Inclusion vs tokenism

Where Do We Go From Here? In Your Chapter? Goals for 2015-16 Executive Board Conversation Program for one meeting next year In Our Meeting in San Antonio Group discussion of Diversity in DKG… Small Group Discussion of Structure and Culture issues as magnified by DMS… What has worked in your chapter? Where does the resistance lie?
