S OFTWARE AS A S ERVICE Present by : Sayed Muchallil CSE 5306 Operating System II Lecturer : Dr. Bahram Khalili

H ISTORY The SaaS as Abbreviation for “ Software as a Service” has been widely used since around 2000 – 2001, after Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) released white paper titled “ Software as a Service: Strategic Backgrounder” in February 2001. Market-place accepted the “Software as a Service” term since 2000 according “ Service-Based Software: The Future for Flexible Software” by Bennett and friends

H ISTORY Can we update our Microsoft Office 2003 with the update for Microsoft Office 2010? Yes For some features; Sometimes not, even worse, that is the feature we want. Solution : we have to find the same update for the version we have. Known as version locked

H ISTORY Another problem if the software vendor does not provide the update for our version. Solution : upgrade our Microsoft Office 2003 to Microsoft Office 2010. If this organization has more than 1000 workstation each has Microsoft Office 2003. It will be a recourses- consumed process. Spend a lot of time IT division staff

H ISTORY Second problem leads to another problem. Financial problem. If each workstation needs 200 USD to upgrade from version 2003 to 2010. It will be = 1000 x 200 = 200.000 USD

H ISTORY Software vendors have to maintain all the version that are used by their customers or organizations. Each version has to be updated Each version has their own problems or security holes. Need more staff and time to handle each version.

H ISTORY Software vendors have to ask their customer to install a demo software to find out their feedback. Not all organization want to install Organization will allocate some IT staff for testing this software before widely used. Need more time to have feed back

D EFINITION Those all are the reasons why SaaS needed What is SaaS ? Software as a Service is using software via the internet, and the software service providers use this method for delivering software because they can support the customer easily with only the single version of product.(Microsoft website) This definition answer all problems before.

S AA S C HARACTERISTICS 1. Multi ‐ Tenant Infrastructure all users and applications share a single, common infrastructure and code base that is centrally maintained. Because SaaS vendor clients are all on the same infrastructure and code base, vendors can innovate more quickly and save the valuable development time previously spent on maintaining numerous versions of outdated code.

S AA S C HARACTERISTICS 2. Easy Customization The ability for each user to easily customize applications to fit their business processes without affecting the common infrastructure. Because of the way SaaS is architected, these customizations are unique to each company or user and are always preserved through upgrades. That means SaaS providers can make upgrades more often, with less customer risk and much lower adoption cost.

S AA S C HARACTERISTICS 3. Better Access Improved access to data from any networked device while making it easier to manage privileges, monitor data use, and ensure everyone sees the same information at the same time.
