Temperature has a big effect on viscosity Ex: When you put syrup on pancakes, it will flow easier Hot lava that reaches the ocean Olive oil in the fridge
3
Demo The ramp method The higher the viscosity, the slower the fluid will run Predict: Hot syrup vs cold syrup Hot motor oil vs cold motor oil Hot honey vs cold honey
4
Particle theory and viscosity As temperature increases, viscosity of a liquid decreases Why: particles have more energy at higher temperatures which means that the particles are able to move easier and will flow better Particles at a lower temperature move with less energy and the spaces between particles get smaller so the particles can’t move past one another and don’t flow as well

1. What is a fluid? Make a list of all of the words related to viscosity. Use those words to create a concept map. Save this, we will add to it. 2. Use the particle theory of Matter to explain what viscosity is and why temperature affects it. 3. Describe two methods used to test viscosity 4. When you pour cereal into a bowl for breakfast, the cereal takes the shape of the bowl. Is cereal a fluid? Explain your answers. 5. Give some examples of how an understanding of viscosity benefits people.
